first of all i wasn't there in 1976 at the kemper arena which is now since gone destroyed in a tornadosome years ago. i was working my way through college and i wasay slinging hah at a restaurant in cape cod but my wife was there. she was working for the campaign and she was on the floor that night and she told me repeatedly many times we talked about it, she said it was the most brilliant reagan speech but i wrote the book -- and if field director was on the floor also and standing next to someone from florida. after reagan gave a speech he muttered oh my god we have nominated the wrong man. at the time we needed 1130 votes for the nomination and he won by 50 or 60 delegates and lost it by 80 some so was very slim and very narrow. there have been accusations over the years that there were some hanky-panky in the new york delegation and a few other states but it was pretty clean as for as i could tell. there were accusations. there were a lie detectors and one police i officer said polygraph tests came back negative. he said it was the first time i've ever heard a politician telling th
