ktvu's ken pritchard is live with the man's ordeal. ken? >> reporter: i talked to the coast guard here in alameda. they say the search continued off the mexican coast. still no sign of the seven people month remain missing. as you said, we did hear from another survivor who is now back home who has a different take on how the crew acted as the boat sank. when the 115 foot fishing charter boat eric sank one week ago in the sea of cortez, survivor charles gordon says he felt strangely abandoned. >> it was surrealistic. i mean i'm here and as i saw the ship pointed this direction, it is like the titanic. it went slowly. i could read the name eric. as it went down in the water. >> reporter: gordon is chief of police for the contra costa community college district. he says his life preserver did just that. a gift he received only after a wave knocked him off the boat. >> a good friend, glen wong, who had a vest and a flotation device, took his vest off and handed it to me. gave a big smile and said charles don't, say i never gave you anything. >

[laughs] and yet this has been a battle. your status as a member of the n.e.a. four has been a decade long, really. yes, it all started in 1990, when the four of us were recommended for funding by peer panels in the n.e.a. and then, under political pressure, john frohnmayer, who was then chairman, took away our grants. and it was during a whole sort of public debate about controversial funding for the arts, and we decided to sue the government. we felt that this was clearly an abridgment of free speech. and it wasn't something that we felt hopeful about ch

we will continue to monitor what is happening, ken wayne on the phone. thank you. >> a second shooting long the delta trail in pittsburg in less than a week. police say it was an accident. neighbors are saying this shooting is a growing problem with violence there. >> reporter: last night's shooting happened 100 yards that way. you may remember last week i was out here on another shooting, that shooting a block in that direction on the trail. neighbors said the trail draw as dangerous element into the area. >> reporter: police spent the day gathering evidence. investigators say the 14-year- old victim was talking long the trail, drinking with friends who were firing a stolen hand gun randomly. >> somehow in the process of doing that our victim was shot. >> reporter: the boy was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. he is expected to survive. witnesses watched it unfold a few feet from their door steps. >> i heard a shot on the trail and then i saw police going down the street, zoom, zoom. >>> the trail is a nuisance, drawing drug users and thieves

ben white, ken rogoff, jean sehati. thank you coming here to grind this down. boy, has it been ground down in washington over and over again. jean, first question here. is it time to simply say let's go for the possible in washington? everybody has all these grand ideas about what they want to do. nobody can get the support to get one of those through. do we have to look for just the possible? >> i think mission number one is to raise the debt ceiling. they cannot get away without doing that. saying they're going to downgrade you. but they left a bit of an out. if you raise the ceiling but give indication you're on the road to getting a deal, we'll keep you on credit watch negative but take you off and affirm your aaa rating if you get it done within a couple of months if we see that possibility. so that's -- that seems to me to be the fallback plan for congress. weather they take -- senator mcconnell has put a fallback plan in that neither seems to like to allow the president to raise the debt ceiling a couple of times. politically it would make him look bad.

ken, you have the financial crisis expert. would failure to raise the debt ceiling trigger another global economic disaster? >> well, it's playing with fire, there's no question about it. the foreign investors, investors are not expecting the united states to default. if they were, we'd be paying way higher interest rates right now. but if we actually did it, it would be a catastrophe. but there's a bright side to this, which is that a year ago, nobody was talking about our unsustainable long-term debt trajectory and now they are. we really need to. so that's at least a good side of this. >> mark, moderate conservative voices like david brooks of "the new york times" are telling republicans it's time to make a deal. brooks wrote this week and it got a lot of attention. if the debt ceiling talks fail, independent voters will see that democrats were willing to compromise but republicans were not. if responsible republicans don't take control, independents will conclude that republican fanaticism caused this default. they will co
