why was ken cucinnelli the republican so close? in part piers in large part because opposition to obama care. a huge issue in the fine days of the campaign because of all the glitches in the rollout. a majority of virginians opposed the president's health care plan voted for ken cucinnelli but it wasn't enough. even though enough to keep ken cucinnelli close, terry mcauliffe using in this campaign number one the gender gap. women by a slight margin outnumbered men. they voted big for the democratic candidate terry mcauliffe. a big part of terry mcauliffe's win in the suburbs, suburban women. the gender gap one big factor. another thing he did especially after the government shutdown, he said ken cucinnelli was the darling of the tea party. 42% of virginia voters opposed the tea party movement. look at what they did today. those voters giving a huge edge to mcauliffe. in a close race the tea party a huge factor here. in the end this was the essence of terry mcauliffe's campaign message even in a state that has been reliably red in t

ken cuccinelli did not run a good campaign.e was hurt by the shutdown which affected northern virginia. when the government shutdown ended, cuccinelli was down eight, ten points. he closed in the last three weeks. not because he was outspent massively, because of obama care. for me the two big takeaways of tonight is chris christie being an impressive governor and impressive politician and will be a force to reckon with nationally. and obama care is toxic. it was dominating the last two weeks. cuccinelli closed on obama care. opposing it. mcauliffe embraced it. cuccinelli said i'll do everything i can to resist and fight obama care. that's what enabled cuccinelli to make this as close as he did. >> how are you reading it tonight? >> i read it as a rejection of the republican party which is different than what bill just said. if you look at what's happening in new jersey, chris christie ran not as a partisan republican but really as a moderate. and the thing that bolstered his numbers from the beginning was the hurricane. hurric

but the reason he was not on the ballot and ken cuccinelli was, is because ken cuccinelli, the tea party guys and the hard right guys out maneuvered them. they picked their choice at a convention, instead of putting it to a vote nation wide. that let them pick their fire and brim stone right-hard choice. that is how you got him instead of bill bowling as the republican candidate for governor. that is how you got a guy like e. j. bowling. the republican's only hope statewide, is too close to call. even after what happened last night, the republican party is making no plans to change that system on how they pick their candidates. they could go back to the old system and choose their candidates in the primary instead of just at a meeting. but they're sticking with the "jut at a meeting" plan, sticks with the convention plan, it could go back to that old system of choosing the candidate at a primary, but they're not doing it. they're going to pick the same system to pick the person running against mike warner. why change, right? everything worked out so great. there are a lot of things that

i think the shutdown really hurt ken cucinelli. northern virginia, especially a lot of government employees. exit polls showed a lot of them were really upset about the shutdown. so they were voting for that. upset with republicans, hurt the republican brand in virginia. it also delayed people being upset about obama care. because had the obama care begun on october 1, the whole debacle of the rollout and the exchanges, you might have had months of ken cucinelli running with twinned at his back, with the national narrative beating up on obama care, cucinelli might have had a great last month, the money might have flowed in, and he might have won. but virginia republicans can blame both the establishment and the tea party i think for this one. it's a real missed opportunity. >> what is the message coming out of that gubernatorial race for both parties? >> there's several messages. they've known ken cucinelli for a decade. i like him a lot. i was rooting for him as well as a conservative certainly. but there are several lessons. one

ken cuccinelli was behind terry mcauliffe. anywhere four to eight points in the last couple of weeks, according to a variety of polls and as you saw last night, ken cuccinelli, the republican candidate, almost won that race. and so the conventional wisdom obviously here in washington, is that it was basically because a lot of the misgivings over the government shutdown had faded away and that concerns were starting to be raised over obama care. and at the same time, we should mention that the president is going to be traveling to dallas, he is going to be talking at an event down there with some navigators in that city. those are the folks hired by the administration to sort of walk through people who are applying for insurance through obama care. and the navigators are critical to the process. and the website issues and people having to use the phone and paper applications to sign up for obama care. what is going to be interesting to see, wolf, is whether or not the president goes back to trying to defend the phrase that he u

ken cuccinelli, however, did not. ken cuccinelli was never bothered by the prospect of having to weigh in legally on an election where he was on the ballot. ken cuccinelli became the first attorney general in 30 years in virginia to not step down from that job when he ran for governor. and now, yes, it's true, his governors race is settled, but the race that is outstanding is the race to replace him as attorney general, and that race is as close as you can possibly believe. ahead of election day it was pretty clear this race was going to be close. the e.w. jackson race was pretty clearly going to be a blowout. the ken cuccinelli/terry mcauliffe governors race looked like it was going to be a blowout. it ended up being closer than the polls indicated, but still, it wasn't really all that close. the attorney general's race, though, between mark obenshain, and republican mark herring, that polled close from the beginning. it has never been anything other than too close to call since the polls closed last week. by the day
