ken bastida is live in mobile5 on treasure island with the latest on the investigation of how it happened. >> reporter: it's a mystery for a lot of different agencies looking into this. we talk to caltrans today and asked for a closer look at the structure, the actual crane that fell. they said they didn't know where it was. so we went looking ourselves. and guess what, we found it about 200 yards behind their office over in oakland. you can see the twisted metal from the crane and how much force must have been applied to get it to break break. we found some employees from american bridge flor who are up on a second crane looking at the cable that was used in moving some of that falsework down off the bottom of the bridge. we talked to caltrans' spokesman andrew gordon. he told us it's an investigation that's going to take a while. >> my understanding is that right now the contractor is working with the coast guard. it's unclear whether osha has become involved or at what stage they will become involved and i'm sure they are going to be look at everything in terms of the equipment to the

"anthony looked at me and said i don't want to scare you, but i have a knife and a gun and i don't want to die alone." at that point she writes she was so afraid her husband was going to kill her that she jumped out of the car as it was moving and escaped into a nearby s

good evening, i'm ken bastida. >> three men found shot to death inside a home on ross station road and killer has not been found yet. kpix5 reporter, joe vazquez, is there. joe. >> reporter: as you can see behind me, crime scene investigators are on the scene. there's yellow tape all around what is essentially a compound of houses here. the sheriff department spokesman says three men were shot to death inside a bedroom of one of the houses on the back part of the property. a couple discovered the bodies of the men shot to death around 3:15. a girlfriend and boyfriend. the boyfriend is the brother of one of the victims. he came by to check on his brother because he hadn't checked on him. the sheriff spokesman said a neighbor reported hearing gun shots, but not saying anyone heard arguing or any other noises before the shooting. the sheriff department spokesman said they are confident they will catch whoever did this and neighbors shouldn't be concerned about being in danger right now. >> this was not a random crime. so i don't believe that there's any danger to any of the citizens of so

i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. kpix 5 reporter kiet do shows us how the guy gave the cops the flip. >> reporter: yeah. when big guys get arrested with just one set of handcuffs, it can put a lot of pressure on their shoulders. so what police officers do is they double cuff the suspects. now, ironically, san jose police were trying to help this guy when he took advantage of them. anthony sanchez is a husky guy. about 275 pounds, he had violated his parole on a drug conviction. so san jose police came to his apartments to arrest him. officers double-cuffed sanchez like this, because he couldn't get his arms close enough together. the undercover officers then put the 32-year-old in the back of an unmarked police minivan, but then dropped papers on the ground. >> literally took a couple of seconds where the officer bent over to pick up the paperwork. and the suspect was able to jump into the driver's seat, put the car in gear and flee the scene. >> reporter: a tenant had just left and the apartment gate stayed open jus

i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook.d our phones, e-mails and twitter posts came pouring in, about a streak of light over the bay area tonight. kpix 5's david jackson saw it with his own eyes. he'll describe it in a minute. but first, christin ayers talked to astronomers tonight. christin? >> reporter: that's right. scientists tell me tonight that the streak they saw across the sky was like lie what's called a small sporadic meteor. that means it was not part of a larger meteor shower. report started coming in at 7:42 this evening. people calling in at kpix 5 to tell us they saw it. the american meteor society had at least 20 reports on it website. and they said it was seen all across the west coast, from seattle all the way down to big sur. lots of those reports pouring in all evening. astronomers are telling us these types of meteors are not all that uncommon, but the fact that the asteroid happened in russia simply has more people watching the skies tonight. and kpix 5 reporter david jackson joining us now. you saw it
