i'm ken bastida. we are setting and getting ready for the big game tomorrow between the 49ers and the seahawks. there has been a lot of talk on both sides as you well know. 49er fans, before we left the city, though, we wanted to kind of just gauge the feelings of the common man. we found george. george runs the park view liquors in san francisco. we just wanted to ask him a regular guy ha he thought about the outcome of this game. here is what he had to say. >> i know my team. i am following my team since 1989. i know the niners very well. and i have a feeling the niners are going there, and are going to crush them man. when they are mad, oh boy. don't mess with them. they are going to kill them. >> reporter: that kind of honesty really through us back a little bit. but you know what? we have heard that from both sides in this epic battle. walks the streets now by the fish market and the space needle talking to 49er fans. talking to seahawks fans. everybody here has supreme confidence. take a look. ♪

ken bastida shows us how the hot bay area housing market can turn a mess into a fortune. >> reporter: the at 20th and valencia, another condo project is rising from the dirt. one more example of a real estate market that defies description. >> unbelievable. yeah. over bids on everything, and less and less inventory. >> reporter: only this particular site tells a story that started back in 1998 when a gallon of regular unleaded cost less than a buck 50. that's when federal law required gasoline stations to replace old underground storage tank with modern corrosion resistant models. a move that put a lot f of mom and pop stations out of business. >> the oil companies can absorb it. we can't. >> reporter: from there, a mix of economics and environmental laws turned many san francisco gas stations into deserted eyesores. just look at the mess sitting right across the street from an operating gas station on south bend s. the cost and bureaucracy involved kept them down for years. now that has changed. >> with the up tick of the market, and more development, and the ease of getting through

good evening, i'm elizabeth cook. >> i'm ken bastida.ng here in the bay area sickening and killing people along the way. 11 deaths have now been blamed on the flu, and that number is expected to rise. just today, sonoma, alameda, san mateo and santa cruz counties all reporting their first flu-related deaths this season. linda yee has more on a deadly case in canada that is also getting a lot of attention. linda? >> reporter: well, ken, that is the avian flu case in canada and it is the first time that deadly virus has hit north america. that should give health officers here in the bay area pause. but right now, they are more concerned with the deadly h1n1 swine flu virus we have seen in 2009 and it never went away. now it is hitting hard, especially at those people at the age between young adults through middle-aged. this year' vaccine did not include the new avian strain that killed a canadian. health officials there say the alberta resident started feeling symptoms on his plane ride back from beijing and stress it was an isolated case.

good evening, i'm ken bastida. >>> your realtime captioner is mrs. linda m.donald. >>> breaking news a health alert closes one of the biggest foster farms plants. good evening, i'm ken bastida. >> i'm elizabeth cook. it's another black eye for foster farms. linda yee on the troubling discovery that shut them down. >> reporter: there is a cockroach infestation at the plant in livingston, california, and that's why the usda shut them down. they are currently under investigation after being implicated in a nationwide salmonella outbreak last year that sickened 400 people. today the agency suspended all poultry processing at the plants, one of the biggest foster farm plants? the state citing egregious conditions, saw cockroaches in the processing line and chicken products on the slaughterhouse floor. the cockroaches were also on a plastic tub that came into contact with chicken. foster farms says it has temporarily stopped operations at its living storm plant to allow for enhanced sanitizing to take place. the plant treatment took place this afternoon and the com

good evening, i'm ken bastida. i'm juliette goodrich in for elizabeth cook. score wildfires.erous it can be. >> and and elizabeth cook. let's go to a live look now to chopper 5 of this massive brush fire burning out of control. it is on kimble island. smoke can be seen in parts of the east bay near antioch. it's a sparsely populated island in the delta. in fact, you can only access the area by boat. the fire breaking out around 2:30 this afternoon. at this point, there are 20 structures on kimble island. you can see some of them are fully engulfed -- engulfed in flames. the coast guard is currently assisting people off of the island. some of them may have left on their own boats. several structures are fully engulfed. this fire happening just around 2:30 this the afternoon. we want to go to other pictures taken a short time ago. check this out. a fire boat tried dousing the flames in the water. and a calfire helicopter was able to make use of delta waters to conduct air drops on some of the most intense flames. now, there's no fire resources on the island itself. the island a

. >> good evening, i'm ken bastida. >> i'm elizabeth cook.vening at reid- hillview airport in san jose. a twin-engine plane touches down but then something went wrong. let's show you the scene from chopper 5 just a short time ago. these pictures show where the plane came to a screeching halt. it was a normal landing but then the plane skidded off the runway. it came to a rest on a perimeter fence that separates reid-hillview airport from owe sala road. and two people on board walked away from that landing. there was some concern about fuel leaking from the plane. now, about 30 minutes ago, airport crews attached a line to the plane and then pulled it off the fence. a few minutes after that the plane was being towed back to the hangar area. no real visible damage to the plane that we could tell. joining us now for more on what happened, eric peterson is on the line the assistant director of the reid-hillview airport. sir, thank you for joining us this evening. did the plane overshoot the runway or somehow skid off the runway? >> the plane lost

peterson, this is ken bastida. i go back, you know, to the late '80s, early '90s where there were a whole slew of problems with this airport. this is right in the middle of a residential area. it's got streets around it. there have been incidents where aircraft have gone into homes. we're going back a few years, granted. but how has the airport been able to coexist with so many people living around it? well? >> i think the pilot community has been cautious in how they operate out of the airport. >> and by that, what do you mean? >> well, this is not an area that has lots of high risk takers. the people who operate here are cognizant of the fact that we're in the middle of a neighborhood and behave accordingly. >> okay. general aviation airport and a lot of small planes, private own, things like that. just stuck in an area of a lot of homes. is it something that pilots take extra precaution ongoing in and out? >> certainly in my conversations with the pilot community at this location, they do take extra precautions.
