despite those polls, republican ken buck lost. and if you keep going back in time over the last few election cycles, there is something real and something kind of inexplicable going on in this state over time. that's, in part, why we're here. you go back to 1996. colorado looks like utah. in 1998, george w. bush over al gore. 2002, republicans won again. 2004, george w. bush wins again. for the first time in a long time in 2004, a democrat won a top-of-the-ticket race in colorado. even as colorado re-elected george w. bush. but it was that first interruption in the republicans running the table in this state. after that little chink in the armor appeared, things started to slide downhill. and they won the governorship that year. 2012, the streak continues. democrats win the presidential vote in colorado, again, despite mitt romney being sure that wouldn't happen. just look at that change in fortune over time. republicans still now believe that colorado is home territory for the republican party. but colorado doesn't vote for them

gardner has similar views to ken buck. not significantly more moderate as they've mentioned. come across as an extremist. i was talking to a republican friend of gardner's just yesterday who mentioned he does a lot of direct camera ads and comes off as sunny and smiley. it's hard to caricature him as an ogre. >> the big difference you're saying, he doesn't put his foot in the way todd aiken and ken buck did, he's avoiding the inflammatory statement. it's the rhetoric. >> absolutely. he's incredibly disciplined. he sounds like he's talking naturally but doesn't make mistakes very easily. he really knows when to pull back. but the other big thing about this, on issues like immigration, for example, which is another thing that really ended up destroying ken buck, he lost 80% of the latino vote and they had higher turnout than they expected. gardner has not embraced immigration reform but said he supports immigration reform generally. he's for the general idea of let's work something out, even if he won't exactly say what it is he supports and much more careful to meet with latin

in 2010, there were five or six polls that showed ken buck was winning among hispanics.hink hispanics in colorado, alsoe alaskans are undercounted in alaska. it could play a large role in either election. times, polls york are likely to undercount democrats. do you worry about pulling data? any flashbacks to 2012? >> we have been really tough on our pollsters. ollinglling community -- p can be has change the mix and technology they are using to polling community has change the mix and how technology they are using. questioning, but also after 2012, how can you not? we learned a lot of lessons. if anything, i feel good about where we are. we are seeing a preponderance of polls that favor our worldview. we are not fooling ourselves and saying, our polling is the right one and there's is wrong. we are constantly checking and looking at the mix. and are we waiting or did we actually speak to them? are we extrapolating based on a few interviews? it is time-consuming and more do notive and posters like it, but that is the challenge we face in becoming a 2000 12. -- after 2012.
