everybody who wants to be one once to be ken burns.'t know who your mobile model was starting out but did you grow up and say i don't want to be in private equity or hedge funds? you said i wanted to be a documentary filmmaker. what propelled you toward that? where did you grow up? ken: i grew up the son of an anthropologist and a biologist mother who died very young of cancer of a 10 year battle of cancer when i was 11. i remember after i'm -- my mom died, i saw my dad cry for the first time at a movie and i said i want to become a movie maker. at that point, that meant alfred hitchcock or john ford, howard hawks, big directors of the 60's but i went to hampshire college, granular experimental school that opened in 70. i went and fall of 71 and all of my teachers were so-called documentary -- social documentary filmmakers that reminded me there is more drama in what is and what was then anything of the human imagination can dream of and often it dreams of things based on historical fact or impossibilities of historical stories as you

[laughter] more than a quarter of a century ago, ken burns came into the consciousness of every americanith his compelling nine part series on the civil war. since that time, ken has continued to make an enormous number of documentaries about american history. i share his love of american history and have come to know ken as a friend and a supporter. i recently sat down with ken to discuss our mutual interest about this country's history. you are, i assume, in new walpole, new hampshire where you do most of your work. walpole, new hampshire is not known as a media center. [laughter] so i am curious how come you happen to do all of your there. ken: i moved here in 1979, 42 years ago, when i realized that becoming a documentary filmmaker focusing on american history was taking a vow of anonymity and poverty. there my first film was nominated for an oscar and everyone assumed i would come back to the city or go to l.a., because of the labor-intensive nature of what i do, the fact it is all grant funded philanthropic projects and that they are very time-consuming. i keep my overhead very low

ken burns counties times is on fire with those episodes in our history. we equivocate in our attempt to be evenhanded. saying democrats and republicans are both guilty. i disagree with that. we had an insurrection by a specific clinical party headed by the criminal president. that is very different and we need to address it more clearly. we have individuals showing up at school board meetings with guns and other violent issue. the violence around the country's much known, white supremacist groups are on the march. these times are different than others. when we try to do this equivocation, it worries me because we don't get to the issues. we have a constitutional framework for our democracy where we assume that all of us agree to what the aspirations we reflect in our constitution. i think today, that is not true. we have a party that is working against our constitutional framework and we need to call that out. we have had people who cheered the insurrectionists, who are now sitting in congress. so how do we identify these embedded domestic enemies that no

you interviewed ken burns, another of your subjects. how can you not watch a ken burns product and not incredibly impressed? he's covered so many topics effort the when she spoke to him about was his incredible document on the vietnam war. i wonder, david, are you feeling now as you did during the divisiveness in america over vietnam, two radically different situation but information at odds with itself in the same way? >> i think it's much, much worse now. it's a difficult contrast. we lost 58,000 many women in vietnam so you can't compare those deaths with the interval skirmishing with having now but in vietnam i do think there were efforts to bipartisan agreements from time to time. we still have legislation in the 1960s and 1970s that was bipartisan. today in washington i partisan -- bipartisanship doesn't exist. virtually, only democrats or republicans have. it's a sad situation when it worked on capitol hill and 1970s bipartisan legislation. i think the situation is much worse than it was in vietnam. vietnam unity with life-and-de

so yeah, it does open up, you know, it's interesting to me knowing, as i watch, ken burns is documentary on country music, 16 brilliant hours man. and at the beginning the, these people were the outsiders. they were, they were thought of as the hicks live out in the sticks. they were the ones who were outside the loop. and so i see a natural affinity between blacks and country music people because they both have felt what it's like to be the other. there's some shared dialogue there. well, you know, crunch country music traditionally. as you dave back, you know, it's, it's, it's a lot to believe that, you know, comes from almost slave music comes from the african americans have was somewhat the banjo is actually an african african american institute. yeah. so yes, so yeah, i mean, you know, a lot of the music that was made in america comes from african americans as far as the beginning of the fingerprints. all over at brother, i remember there was a beautiful part in air where nashville, let's face facts nashville at that time. did have some red next, but i remember they had this little
