ken burns, baseball. the idea, home plate has a little roof, blue roof. it has a roof. it's a little house. it brings us back to we're safe and where we care, where we are cared about, where we're loved. coming home on a baseball that happens pretty darn dramatic. you feel immense relief to have gotten out of all those hazards out there between first and third is hazardous territory. and then third home is joy you're out of trouble, you're coming back and you're running toward the home team dugout. you can see them and they're all grinning and they're glad to see you and their arms out and you come across that thing. it's pretty big playing stuff. it's passed along from parents to children and my father was a football fan, but my mother a baseball fan. so i went ball games with my mother. she passed along her sense of the game. i'll pass it along to. my son, it is a family heirloom. it is america's heirloom because it goes back so far. but the thing that's most important about that is that we and people of other generations, baseball, perhaps more than we respect other

one thing that really struck in my mind was ken burns superb documentary series on vietnam.nk it was the third installment where mcnamara and johnson are on the phone together. mcnamara is saying to johnson, mr. president, ho chi minh, the revolutionary leader, has been pushed aside in hanoi. there is a new fellow. what you had was the secretary of defense telling the president that the leadership of our enemy had changed. the president had never curved of -- heard of him. when that was uncovered through the pentagon papers, it was devastating. he probably would have told me he read that. the truth is it was a devastating document of what happened to us as we went into vietnam not knowing what we were doing. remember, this was 1995. he wanted us to avoid doing similar things in the world. we all know what happened in afghanistan and iraq. major wars in countries we really did not understand. if mcnamara had lived to see that, he probably would have said that the lessons were not learned. >> in 1995, the book came out. the coverage was hsh a review was skating. someone said t

we're so one of the things that started me in my vicksburg was i was so angry with ken burns, a good friend. ken, i think a magnificent series on the civil war. but he passed vicksburg like a nanosecond. and i thought that's a pretty big battle, you know, and i understand why he didn't have photography and few documentary filmmaker you don't have images. you can't do the battle. that was a magnificent series, although must confess that relying shelby foote to the extent that he did, didn't exactly provide the most balanced perspective, including you know, i wish allan nevins were alive or. yes, yes, bruce catton would have been mcpherson. i was reading the bruce catton grant takes command. someone gave it to me right before i went to the shoot. yeah, it was really great. well, ladies and gentlemen, i hope that you now see why we kept trying year, year after year, to get this great emeritus on this stage in this great location here, which is so tied again to the movement that helped to win the civil war in the end. and to add to this. 262nd birthday celebration of america's ulysses. th
