joining me to talk about a big church service happening here in the south bay is pastor ken foreman.h the cathedral of faith. thanks for getting up early and joining us on this good friday. >> oh, it's my pleasure. >> it's nice to have you. you'll still have the joy obviously on easter sunday but this has been very different for people. a huge transition for them celebrating whether it be the church services, masses, all virtually. how has that been for you as a pastor relating to your congregation? >> it's been very challenging. in a way my heart's broken because i love seeing our parishionersfa-to-face, and i think that's the way we were wired. and so to not have that, there's a sense of loss there but at the same time the power of the easter message still goes on. you can't cancel easter and maybe that message of god's love, which is really what easter is all about is more important now than of. >> very much so. it's nice to have people find a basis in faith as well especially when you're getting through for the good times and the hard times, don't you think? >> oh, yeah, yeah. to

. >> reporter: but even pastor ken foreman was surprised by this, surging crowds. a double line of cars snaking around the church's parking lot and a spillover that jammed up surrounding blocks and even created a backup on the nearest freeway off ramp. >> we're trying to serve as many cars as we can and doing it as quickly as we can but the numbers of cars has been overwhelming. >> reporter: so much so that san jose police had to come in and direct traffic on curtainer avenue which was becoming gridlocked. it stayed that way for hours with church volunteers filling up shopping carts and giving away bread, pasta, vegetables and juice it would cost hundreds of dollars at the supermarket. >> our typical month, we'd do a million dollars a month in giveaway. in a week, this week we'll do over a million dollars. >> reporter: a month ago, most the people driving up were surviving on their own but many lost their jobs and can scarcely afford food. this man worked in the hote >> no. >> reporter: a restaurant worker told me in spanish he's been out of the job for more than a

pastor ken foreman said he's never seen anything like it. >> our typical month we would do $1 million a month in food giveaway. in a week, this week, we'll do over $1 million. >> reporter: and as the demand rises... >> i probably have in the neighborhood of 60,000 to 70,000 boxes that i'll leave in the field. >> reporter: farmers fear they could soon be out of business. florida farmer ken carpenter gave away what he could to food banks. but he has produce that will rot. >> not enough customers for all the tomatoes, beans, squash, everything that's raised in homestead. we're august struggling. >> reporter: this church in pan sailed paid row is now giving food away every two weeks. it's estimated 200 food banks would need an additional $1.4 billion in resources over the next six months to continue to feed those in need. mia. >> gradney: thank you, danya. there is mounting evidence this virus is claiming an alarming number of african american lives. in illinois, the black mortality rate is five times that for whites. dean reynolds takes us to a chicago hospital looking to the future for

ken foreman: i once had a chance to interview a man who trained lions for the movie studios. brought a lion with him to the interview. talk about an experience. when our cameraman put down a piece of tape on the floor where i was supposed to stand, he wrote the word "lunch" on it. it's a good thing the lion couldn't read. when you get close to a lion, you realize how they became symbols of strength and bravery. and that's why we can live courageously. in one place, the bible says that jesus is like a lion, the lion of judah.
