ktvu's ken pritchett is in walnut creak with what is expected there. ken? >> reporter: behind me is the canal. a flood control area. one resident told me a few days ago it was dry and now you can see it is flowing. that is expected to increase as the storms go on. the contra costa county flood control district says they are not sure how much auditor we will see but -- water we will see but they are not concerned about canals. it is large and engineered to handle severe storms. she lived next to the canal for 24 years. >> we haven't had any concerns so far. maybe 4-5 years ago there was a lot of water and it came up close. it is exciting. >> the bigger concern is those who ignore the danger signs that are posted long the canal area. in 2011 two children died during a time of heavy flow following a rain storm, two teens. neighbors say there have been a number of incidents. the residents expect to see the canal flowing heavily after the weekend. the concern is for the smaller uncontrolled creeks that are prone to flooding in the bay area. the flash flood watch

ktvu's ken pritchett joins us live with how they will help. ken? >> reporter: the air force will do what it does best and that is move an incredible amount of equipment in a matter of hours. >> the large cargo planes that make the effort possible but it is the men and women who will do the real work. >> we have active duty, reserve, and we have family members. >> reporter: he says this c-17 plane is just one of two launched today at 2:00 a.m. the largest plane, the c5 was loaded up with equipment and 30 personnel to help. at march air force base, they will join planes that will be loaded up with 600 tons of supplies to support relief efforts on the east coast. including 60 vehicles from southern california edison. >> they will move equipment and personnel to new york that will allow us to turn the light switch on for the east coast. >> reporter: some or all of these planes were scheduled to arrive on the east coast today but we haven't received a confirmation that they have arrived. the mission will last two weeks. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 new

ktvu's ken pritchett is live in daly city. >> reporter: at first the city said 45,000 gallons of water came from that pipe, sending mud flowing down the hill into a park. we have video from news chopper 2, showing you the effected area. the city says 97,000 gallons of water came from that pipe. a believable amount given the mess left behind. >> reporter: piles of hey rolled out on mud, these are the steps the city is taking to shore up a mudslide with rain on the way. >> not to have any mud flow impacts. dress the concerns -- address the concerns they have. >> reporter: this is tuesday morning after a water main break sent mud flowing into the neighborhood, burring the street and cars in mud. today the street is clear but the park is still buried in mud. the goal is to stop more mud from coming down into the streets. >> here is what crews were able to do in 36 hours, dig this channel so any rain that falls this weekend should be trapped right here and stay out of the park and the neighborhood. >> reporter: any water should go into the storm drain. the city says it was an old cast iron

new at 6:00, ken pritchett went to placer county to explore the improving conditions for the fish. >> along a creek you've probably never heard of in a town you might have passed through we met mike healy with fish and game. >> we're in auburn ravine in the city of lincoln. >> reporter: it's a small creek but something significant is happening here perhaps a return to what once was. >> so far we've counted close to 400 fish. >> chinook salmon, the same kind you see here. last year on auburn ravine, he ran into this. few fish made it by. today a gentle watery slope approaches that structure, an $800 fish slider paid for by the nevada water district. >> they have at least another 3 miles of habitat that was opened up. >> we're about two to 3 miles upstream of the fish lad every right now and here is proof those fish were able to make it past that point. there is what they call a red there. a spawning bed in the spawning bed of the creek. this is about as far as most of those salmon can go. because another concrete barrier awaits the salmon here. one healy hopes hopes will one day be gon

ktvu's ken pritchett joins us from daly city. you learned the amount of water and mud is much larger than first thought. >> reporter: yeah. at first the city said 45,000 gallons of water and mud and essentially buried this city park and flowed into the neighborhood. now the city says it was more than twice as much. not 45,000, but 97,000 gallons of water that created this mess. >> reporter: this is a picnic table, the top of it, buried in 3 feet of mud. the mud came from the hill slide. this is the park and neighborhood tuesday morning a steady flow of water sent mud into the street. burring cars. some are still caked today. the job of city crews today was shoring up the slide area. >> all the debris stays here because we have the pending rains coming. >> the goal is to stop more mud from flowing into the neighborhood this weekend. the mud was topped with erosion netting, hey. here is what they were able to do in 36 hours and that is dig this channel so any rain that falls this weekend should be trapped here and stay out of the p
