i'm ken smith. >>> breaking news out of durham: someone was shot outside northgate mall. let's get to the scene. spokesperson, durham police a few minutes ago. he tells me this woman was taken to the hospital after being shot in the arm. you can see behind me that the scene is still active. police and investigators still out here trying to piece together exactly what happened. we know this call came in at about 7:05. came in at about 7:05. a woman was shot here in the parking lot at northgate. she was taken to the hospital. no one is in custody at this point. and they're not quite sure if they're looking for more than one person who could be responsible for this shooting. also not quite certain if they're looking for a man or a woman. but i was told by durham police that it started with some sort of "activity inside the mall then spilled out into the parking lots." then of course this woman was shot. they have not release herd name, age, identity at this point. her condition or her identity as it becomes available. ken? >> candice sweat reporting on this developing story.

ken smith continues our live coverage. >> ken, would you think conditions are getting worse or better? >> well, we have been around the wa coty area for the most part major roads, things are getting a little better on the problem, secondary roads. some parts have been without power for several hours here. right there, that's the culprit. ice accumulating on these power lines. that's really the problem and here's something else that can happen when ice builds up on power lines. this is the scene on -- where a tree limb came crashing down on top of a transit bus. the tree limb got lodged in the windshield wiper. no one got hurt. crews arrived and removed the trees started falling around the try tri-angle. one neighbor said it sounded like fire crackers. again, no one was hurt but the falling tree did damage part of a fence and came dangerously close to some nearby homes. a short time later we got another call about a tree falling on centennial campus. not far from centennial parkway. it appears the weight of the ice on the limbs uprooted this tree. but you can see the tree fell in the w

ken smith is live with how technology participated in these crimes. reporter: this neighborhood is not unlike any others, cars parked along the sides or in the driveway. some residents in one neighborhood had a series of breaks in. it's -- suspected thieves are using keyless devices to break the series of breaks in happened in raleigh. the police confirm six reports of car breaks in in this neighborhood, at least one car was stolen. we talked with neighbors who tell us the suspected thieves actually targeted as many as 15 cars, but here's what's strange. most residents who were victims of the break-ins say that cars were looked and the windows were not broken. neighbors believe available technology allows thieves to use universal key fobs, similar to the ones you see here, that can open several cars at one time. someone can amplify the signal that overrides the locks. the same is true for garage door openers. one neighbor we spoke with says he and his fellow residents are still perplexed by the break- ins. >> that was a little unnerving for all of us.
