[applause] >> thanks so much, chris, mary, it's a pleasure to be here. to be here in the building, to in this building. noah webster spoke at the connecticut historical society back in the day and my book has, at the very end has the last speech in a public speech advocate at the connecticut historical society which i researched in this building. so it's really exciting to be here my book is called the forgotten founding father and it really should have an asterisk, because in hartford and west hartford, noah webster is not forgotten and he's not a forgotten founding father. and the point of this book is to tell the rest of the country about just how much noah webster has achieved, particularly in my state, massachusetts. i do a lot of my research at boston matinee and the first thing you see is a big portrait of daniel webster. and that's part of the problem. a lot of americans think that daniel wrote the dictionary, particularly in massachusetts. so i want to tell you about webster'

for more on today's closing arguments, we're now joined by kendall coffey, a former u.s. attorney in florida, who has worked on many high-profile cases. he has been closely watching this trial. good evening to you. as you look back, which side has the stronger case after a month-long trial? >> well, the prosecution has a strong circumstantial case based on plenty of forensic evidence. but the question is, do they have without any smoking gun, evidence enough to prove premeditated murder by a mother who apparently loved her child beyond a reasonable doubt? that's why i think in the final analysis, the first-degree murder charge, premeditation, is going to be a close call. >> how important are closing arguments? today's closing arguments? is it your experience that generally jurors already have their minds made up by this point in a trial? or can they be the clincher? >> well i think plenty of the jurors have got very strong feelings before today, as to how this ought to turn out. the closing is going to accomplish a couple of things. first of all, it can be the difference-

president and general counsel for families against mandatory minimums, and criminal defense attorney kendally. just looking at some of the history of this and how it started, the 1986 law, five grams of crack was equal to 500 grams powdered cocaine, which led to a mandatory five years behind bars. now, that law then changed over time, 28 grams, which is equal inform five years, the disparity here it went from 100-1 in terms of the comparison, powder cocaine to being kra, to 18-1 over that time. why are we waiting so long to say the parity among the two? >> after listening to the sentencing commission send in report after report talking about particularly the racial disparity inherent in the sentencing structure, we've had enough. and a nearly unanimous congress overturned the law a year ago. >> when you look at this and the history of the law, there has been big questions about the racial disparity and who it affects when we take a look at those who use crack versus cocaine. >> well, the courts look at that, too, and they consistently rejected any theories it was racially discriminatory. let

we turn now to former prosecutor kendall coffey.d morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> we were sitting, the three of us, watching that close yesterday. and look, as a parent, i couldn't turn away from this. i thought he did an excellent job of laying out the entire story. a story we really hadn't heard before. what did you think? did he get the job done as far as the prosecutor ashton goes? >> he did a very effective job. it was a textbook performance in terms of putting the pieces together in a circumstantial case. everything from 31 days of partying and lying by casey anthony to the forensic evidence that placed the body in the trunk of cay's car and the duct tape on the mouth of little caylee anthony. and at the same time, he bolstered up the theory of motive which was always the biggest puzzle in this case and said that casey anthony had to silence the child who was getting to be of talking age and would be exposing the double lies that -- the difficult, bizarre life that casey anthony was living. very compelling prosecution
