i read every book by kenneth roberts, who is a historical novelist from many years ago. i read a series called the landmark books -- i am showing my age. these were not professional histories. i was fascinated by these stories. my feeling is that i would love to see people engage history in whatever way makes them happy. whether it is fiction, television, film. what happens is once people get engaged, then they want to know the facts. if i stand there and start lecturing people -- this is what happened -- they are going to fall asleep. i find when i am on an airplane and get in a conversation with someone and say you are historian, what often happens is i have been watching this. is this good history, is this right? i went to a film last week -- "lincoln." it is not the facts necessarily, it is the level of engagement and getting the generalities right. it. we can quibble with all sorts of things a historian rolls their eyes about. on the other hand, there were things he got right and raised important questions. compared took back 10 years ago and we close with asking --

cbs reporter kenneth craig is in parkland, florida for us this evening. >> reporter: well allen and liz, the last couple of days, so many people in this community have been struggling to ups how this could have happened despite so many warning signs. and then today, this bomb shell admission from the fbi. the fact that the bureau received a tip just a few weeks ago about this and did not act. a former maybe says this video shows nikolas cruz in his backyard shooting what may be a pellet gun. the fbi now admits it should have been investigateing the florida teenager weeks ago. it received a tip in january with information ability his weapons, his desire to kill and the potential for a school shooting. the tip was never forwarded to the miami field office and no investigation was conducted. >> we will be looking into where and how, if the protocol broke down. and we will come bag stronger than we ever were before. >> reporter: while the investigation moves forward, this grieving community is finding its views. 17-year-old david survived the massacre which killed 17 students and staff. she

that's where kenneth craig begins our team coverage. >> reporter: good evening to you from parkland, florida where as you can see more than 24 hours later deputies still have the scene blocked off tonight. it's just down the street from the park inside the neighborhood where hundreds of people turned out tonight for a candle light vigil. 19-year-old nikolas cruz is behind bars facing 17 counts of premeditated murder. his attorney says he's a deeply troubled young man who fell through the cracks. >> he's fully aware of what's going on and he's just a broken human being. >> police say cruz bought his semiautomatic rifle last february. cruz took an uber to the scene of the crime wednesday and started shooting around 2:21 in the afternoon. i was hiding in an open room that the shooter could have easily walked into and killed me. >> police say cruz told them after the rampage he ditched his gun and ammunition and planned to save himself. >> the suspect crossed the field and ran west and tried to mix in with the group that was running away fearing for their lives. >> an officer from a neig

kenneth is in parkland tonight. >> reporter: it was an emotional return for the students here in parklandit was a sea of strength and support as thousands of students and parents made their way back into the halls of this south florida school. this orientation was a chance for families to prepare for the week ahead. classes are set to resume wednesday, and there are still major concerns about security. parkland is trying to move forward as the demand for answer s intensifies. 74 state lawmakers sent a letter to rick scott, the governor of florida, to suspend the sheriff, a democrat, saying they ignored repeated warning signs about the suspected shooter. and they are investigating reports about police officers who responded to the school. the claim, several deputies wait ed instead of rushing in during the shooting. the school's resource officer, scott peterson, on video taking cover, has resigned. the building will never be useed again. the superintendent says it will be torn down and the school will likely build a memorial park for the 17 people killed. kenneth, parkland, florida. >>> st
