kenneth craig reports on the latest developments. >> reporter: senator john mccain's family shared a statement saying the arizona republican has decided to discontinue medical treatment for the aggressive glioblastoma he's been fighting for more than a year. his family noted he has passed expectations for his survival. senator mccain was diagnosed with the deadly brain cancer last july after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. he stepped away from washington to focus on treatment. but just two weeks after brain surgery, the arizona senator returned to the senate floor and deidentified fellow -- defied fellow republicans, casting the vote that stopped the repeal of obamacare. he has been fighting his brain cancer at his home in arizona. former secretary of state john kerry called him a brave man. mccain's family said they were grateful for the support and kindness of all of his caregivers and for the thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers. kenneth craig, cbs news new york. >> now, senator mccain has long been a critic of fully orepublican -- fell
