kenneth johnson, i would like to start with you. what's your reaction to the u.s.o reopen your son's case? >> well, we're happy that a fresh pair of eyes is starting to look at kendrick's case, and we're just waiting on the truth to really come out. >> jacqueline, why do you believe that the school or the sheriff's office or anyone would attempt to cover up or at the very least, not try to get to the bottom of the circumstances behind your son's death? >> i don't know. that's what we're trying to find out. that's why we're trying to get to the truth. i have no idea. >> do you think race played a role at all in how the initial investigation into kendrick's death was handled? >> well, certainly you have to consider race as a factor, but i don't think that that's the end-all in terms of trying to understand why this case was handled in the way that it was. we believe that certainly if there is a coverup, it is a coverup for somebody and not a nobody. so who this person might be or who the individuals might be is a mystery at this point, and we are hoping that the inve

. >> reporter: jacquelyn and kenneth johnson believe their son was murdered by a group of students, then stuffed in this rolled-up wrestling mat. >> why did this happen to kendrick at school? why? >> reporter: but lowndes county sheriff's deputies and the georgia bureau of investigation say he died in a tragic accident. that he fell head first into the upright mat reaching for a shoe, got trapped and couldn't breathe. >> reporter: based on the information we know now, the autopsy findings, our investigative findings, our case is closed. >> reporter: the official autopsy did rule the death an accident. but five months later, johnson's family exhumed his body. a second autopsy by a private pathologist determined his death was due to blunt force trauma to his right neck. >> we found the trauma in an area that was not previously looked at in the first autopsy. >> reporter: in an odd twist dr. bill anderson discovered johnson's organs were missing and his body was filled with newspapers. a spokesperson for the georgia bureau of investigation said the agency stands by its team of medical exami

now jacquelyn and kenneth johnson want justice for their son. >> i really believe he was murdered. bruises on his face. >> reporter: the johnson family has hired benjamin crump, the same attorney who worked with the family of trayvon martin, the african american teenager who was shot and killed in florida in a confrontation with neighborhood watch vol kear george zimmerman. >> no justice! >> reporter: supporters of johnson's family have held rallies, alleging a cover-up. they've demanded a federal investigation. today, u.s. attorney michael moore agreed to look into the case. >> i do this with an open mind, neither accepting nor rejecting the opinions of anyone who has previously investigated the circumstances of his death. >> reporter: now, moore says he if he finds evidence of a possible crime he will press the f.b.i. to investigate but the georgia chief medical examiner is standing by his finding that the death was accidental, saying there is no evidence the teen was murdered. >> pelley: we'll be right back.
