kenneth craig reports, it's a growing problem across the nation. >> reporter: the most recent suicide right outside the precinct on new york's staten island was a six-year veteran of new york. 29-year-old michaelce commissioner said in a statement, is part of a mental health crisis and law enforcement as a whole must take action. earlier this month two others died by suicide, one a respected chief, the other an experienced detective. >> cops have to know there are avenues for help and it's not a weakness to ask for help. it's a strength. >> reporter: the three deaths are part of a disturbing trend nationwide. last year at least 167 officers died by suicide. that's more than the number who died in the line of duty according to massachusetts' nonprofit blue help. cbs news rode alongside the police chaplain, trying to reach out to vulnerable officers. >> these officers see more evil in the course of a ten-hour tour than most anybody sees in a lifetime. >> reporter: so far just this year, 93 officers nationwide have died by suicide. it's already on track to exceed last year. kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. >>> coming up on "cbs this morning," keeping the u.s. women's soccer team safe at the wor
