steve: one last question, kenneth osgood. what are the lessons? what can we take away from history? how can we apply that to 2019? kenneth: it's a question i struggle with. i want history to provide me with clear, helpful guidance and it often doesn't. i think some of the lessons include that we have encountered attempts at misinformation and disinformation before, and we have organized to oppose those, and i think we can do so again with appropriate leadership in -- leadership. the lessons of history also direct us to be attentive to the ways in which, in fact, the ease in which democratic institutions or insisting political institutions can be swept away, eroded from within. they identify the power of propaganda of the kind we are seeing and suggest that we, as american citizens need to be attentive to it. we need to be alert to it, we need to develop tools to analyze information. understand what is credible and not credible, and we need to hold our leaders to account when they disseminate falsehoods. steve: if our viewers google your name and ny times, your essay from october 2017
