it happened right along connecticut avenue in the heart of kensington. news chopper 7 video shows it has become a major traffic situation. gail half as live on the scene with the breaking details. >> it has been a couple of hours and it still very active. they are searching for the gunmen in this case. you can see the police behind me here on connecticut avenue. a man and woman were driving in a minivan, and this is what would this is tell us. they were arguing. they heard a gunshot and saw the woman tumbled out of the vehicle. in this surveillance tape come you can see two vehicles rolled to a stop. from the passenger side, the woman shot in the head is pushed out of the vehicle. several people around rushed over to help the woman by giving her cpr. you can see the vehicles pull away when the light changes. >> the registering dissever like and they realized she was shot. she was dying. you see them trying to save her life. >> i was feeling really bad about the situation. >> this manager of the gas station was peeling really mad. he remembers one get dec

a woman found shot to death in kensington. then her accused killer found dead in rockville. delia goncalves is live in kensington where this tragic story began. >> reporter: good morning. the folks who live and work in this area soon will not forget the horrific scene they saw yesterday when that woman was shot in the head, left to die in the middle of busy connecticut avenue. let's take a look at some video. this is the police -- the man police say committed that murder. the victim's estranged husband. 51-year-old philip gilberti. surveillance video captured the crime as gilberti shot heather lynne mcguire and then pushed her body out of the vehicle before speeding off himself. court records show the two were married in 2009, had three children who we're told are all safe at this hour. the couple was going through a divorce. after the victim filed several restraining orders against him. the suspect was released from jail just three days before the murder for violating those restraining orders. she told police and the courts she thought her estranged husband was going to kil

a killer in kensington. a woman gunned down at a busy intersection as rush hour winds down. police released this photo of the man they're looking for. 51-year-old phillip gilberti. kristen fisher has more. >> he's a powerful guy. and he acts before he thinks. >> reporter: he's been friends with 51-year-old phillip joseph gilberti for 40 years. phil stopped by his mechanic store, so he struck up a conversation that just took place on connecticut avenue. >> i said kensington is shut down. someone just killed a lady and dumped him out. he said tom, i got to go. and i go, give me a ride, i need a ride to the metro real quick. i go, all right. phil, let me see what's going on. i went into the shop, came back out, and he was gone. >> he was gone, but he left his van parked outside that mechanic shop. police believe just minutes earlier, that same van rolled up to this intersection. inside is believed to be gilberti and a woman. he shot her in the head before dumping her body in the middle of the street and sped off. when we asked tom if he thought his friend was capable of such a

this all started, folks, at 9:39 this morning in kensington along connecticut and noels.s is right in front of the same shell gas station are where one of the d.c. snipers killed someone years ago. here's what happened according to police. they say that the suspect was stopped at a red light. he had fired his gun, killed a woman in the car. the woman was later identified as heather lynn mcgwire. police say the suspect then opened the door of that car, threw her out and then drove off. soon after that is when phillip gilberti was named a suspect in this investigation. that's when police began a region wide search for phillip. they searched throughout kensington, throughout aspen hill, all areas of montgomery county. late this evening they got a tip he may have been here in the college gardens area. that's why police came out to this area, a s.w.a.t. team was here just like you heard chief major explain. they located the house they believed he was at. when they did have an opportunity to look inside, they found the suspect dead inside from what is believed to be a self-infl
