area call kent stati the area call kent statd the area call kent state the area call kent state. and all of the narrators are coming to terms with the dead, with the manner of their death, the wounded and the manner of their injuries. it's not simply that students were shot, but rather why they were shot, that the shooting, the woundeding and the dying have signified. hence the heart of the matter is the contextualizing of the dead and the wounded. through oral history that emerge in the process of narration, recording and analyzing those narrators. we're engaged in an effort to assign meaning to the deaths that craig outlined and to the larger period of time we have come to call, quote, the '60s. we're mrs. considering issues of power in society and the narrators discuss various conversations, issues related to government policy, to university policies, to behavior and to social norms as well. and again, just considering this issue in terms of the idea of reconciliation over the deaths and the two issues there are the reconciliation and again the larger meaning of the 1960s. if

john garibaldi was a young professor at kent state in psychology. he was interviewed by craig for the project. he has followed this pattern as well. i'll play a short clip from his interview here. >> what do you think the consequences were of the shootings? >> well, one of the consequences that was rather parent was that there weren't any further demonstrations. that is to say, there weren't demonstrations of the sort that we had or that were going on. it was like all of a sudden people realized this was a deadly game. this was not a panty raid kind of mentally. this was not something that could be done on a whim without regard to consequences, that the consequences were indeed dramatic and severe. and i think it was a sobering moment nationally to see that we could have an occasion where the youth of our country were actually killed by the military units that were there to preserve the peace. of course, there was a lot of sympathy for slain students, talking about young people, they weren't children, first of all. they were young, they were age of

pryer to iu she was special collections librarian at kent state university where he headed the kent state shootings oral history project and did approximately 40 interviews on the events pertaining to may 4, 1970. craig is a member of the academy of certified archivists and twice a member at the oral history training institute held annually at kenyon college. gregory wilson is associate professor in the department of history at the university of akron. his research and teaching interests include 20th century united states political economy, public and environmental history, ohio history and the scholarship of teaching and learning. he is the author of "communities left bre hind: the area redevelopment administration 1945 to 1965" as well as the co-author on an upcoming state hisry of ohio. his oral history project done with ua students, the times they were aranging, akron remembers 1968, won the ohio academy of history, public history award in 2010. their paper is entitled "above the shots, the kent state shootings and the politics of truth, trauma and reconciliation." craig? >>> okay. th

i was at ohio state as i told you when kent state occurred. and i remember it vividly. i still have a lot of anger and resentment. i have no problem assigning guilt. i don't think you order the national guard or allow them to have live ammunition on campus. so this is to me one of the most heinous things when we kill our own students. i think this is terrible. the way in which i have tried to cope with this, not very well, is that i have bought a day, may 4th, at the local radio station and i dedicate it to the lives of the students who were killed that day. but there is an alternative to the way in which corso and rogue who i hope are in hell handled that incident. no national guard were called. no live ammunition. no students were killed. that is leadership that requires courage. that is heroism. all of that was lacking at ohio and kent state. the route 50 bridge is a headache on kent island as you pass over towards east ton and st -- easton and st. michael. it's not kind that will come down points south of us and the district. let's show you some of our hd abc2 weather bug cameras. it gets much more significant as you go closer into d.c., coming down here, kind of tough to see at times. that's one of the bigger headaches. alexandria, you can see the snow coming down in washington. so a headache. i want to make sure. visibility getting reduced towards bwi. some places coming down and that cloud deck sinking. air temps getting right to the point where we could see some of the snow sticking out there. dulles, winchester, baltimore, one above freezing. the eastern shore you're right at that freezing point. you have to watch out, especially the elevated bridge surfaces. that's where we're likely to see snow sticking. 40 in the inner harbor. 37 in cambridge. satellite radar showing the back side will be a short event. it's poor timing in terms of all the monday evening traffic. this will continue to push, ending from west to east

the warm air was with us all afternoon long with sunshine coming out there. 61 n at kent island. these are the normal temperatures for the second week in april. amazing here in this portion of the country for january. 59 was the afternoon high today. 39 with the rain early this morning. the record is 68 and 7 below 0. 1982, that was a cold one. oakland just shifted to the west at 16. the wind gusts up in the mountains could get to 30-40 miles an hour. we'll see strong winds late tonight, tomorrow morning. but they'll be out of the west, northwest. that will drag the cold air in with the rain this morning. quickly moved away from the area. saw that bright sunshine. the front to the west of us now. essentially i think we're going to look for partly cloudy tonight. snow showers breaking out along the great lakes. that will be in garret county by late tonight and tomorrow. nothing here until maybe thursday night. maybe a few snow showers with the next front coming in with cold air. friday into saturday, a warm front will begin to approach. it may produce some clouds and light precipi
