we can speak now to tara smith, a professor of epidemiology at kent state university in ohio and peter chowka, a freelance political journalist who is in seattle. thank you for talking to us. regarding those comments at the end of last week, peter, how did you respond? well, the comments were mainly in response to the white house coronavirus task force meeting on thursday, which president trump got into musing out loud, back and forth with several of his experts on the stage. he had apparently seen a new study by the department of homeland security which found that ultraviolet light, a component of sunlight, played a positive role and destroyed the coronavirus in two minutes when it normally takes, normally lasts on a service for about 18 hours and by the way, there was another study along these lines put out by the university of

professor cara smith is an epidemiologist, professor at kent state university of public health. she has been abiding by the ohio stay at home order there. so, doctor, professor, how will this impact rural areas? what are you concerned about, and are they prepared? >> right. so let's start with the last one. i don't think we are prepared. rural areas are a little bit different in that they don't have, by and large, the expertise that a lot of these urban areas have. in many places they may lack epidemiologists at all. they might not have people who are skilled in contact tracing and responding to these types of outbreaks. and most importantly, a lot of rural hospitals are closed over the last decade, is places where individuals can be treated are lacking in a lot of these areas. and then, of course, the equipment that goes with them, ventilators and people that are

states? let's discuss. dr. kenttz is here, the professor of medicine and infectious diseases at weil cornell medical college. and dr. celine gounder, an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist. good evening. good to see both of you. dr. gounder, i'm going to start with you. because there is a new model found and it found that if georgia had maintained its pre-friday lockdown policy, in other words before they opened things like salons and gyms their coronavirus fateality range would be between 1,000 to 2,922 by june 15th. that includes the 870 people that already died. but under georgia's reopening the range jumps to 1,604 to 4,236 deaths. it clearly shows the risks georgia is taking here. >> well, right. and i think viewers at home have probably heard us speak about this so many times now. that there are a couple of conditions that really need to be met before you can safely lift social distancing restrictions. one of which is you really want to see influenza-like illness, cases of covid as well as deaths

state has started to cool down. yet there are places in rural michigan that are heating up that we are watching very closely. what we know about -- if we are county at alpena or kent which is not room michigan. it is the west side of the state. it has not been as concerning a southeast michigan. while they have got plans and we are working closely with them, as this fire is continues to spread, not each of those other places are as well equipped as kent county is if they covid-19 -- a covid-19 spark starts to happen. as we determine and associate risk with various sectors of our economy, we also associate geography as a part of that risk analysis. that's a part of the determination about where we need to mitigate risk and where we need to be mindful about the sequencing of different sectors of our economy starting to reengage. any questions for the epidemiologist? i don't know if they will know the answer to budget questions. how confident are you that there won't be more layoffs coming for state employees? the budget shortfall is estimated to be $2.5 billion. the layoffs are about $5 million. is that enough? what else can the state to? are you confident that we w

but i am very proud of governor kent for being the first to open the state. >> but not everyone is rushing to reopen. the owners of this atlanta barbershop say they are not ready until they can acquire proper safety equipment. >> without masks, and without regular testing for our a symptom attics staff, we won't feel comfortable opening. it's very similar to just letting us out in the desert with no water. >> gyms and fitness centers are also allowed to reopen, but this l.a. fitness here remains closed. the parent company or dominic wanting to play it safe, also ymcas are remaining closed. they want to employ a more social distancing efforts, sort of undergoing a renovation, so that when customers do come back, it will be safe. here at this a strip mall, there are a number of spas that have reopened here. again, following those very strict social distancing protocols, but as far as customers, neil, this lot is less than a quarter full, judging from all the cars here. back to you. >> neil: all right, jonathan, thank you very much. now let's go to texas, where they reopen things, not across-
