this happened outside the kentland community center in landover maryland today. three people were shot. tracee wilkins is live with the investigation. >> reporter: we're talking about a shootout on a playground where three people were injured and in the midst of this one of the workers from the rec center ran toward the shooting. >> when gunshots were fired at 10:30 this morning just steps away from the kentland center. she did the opposite of what most would do. >> i walked outside to make sure it wasn't anyone i knew. yeah. i mean, because at the end of the day it's part of our family, the whole community. >> reporter: she runs the after-care program here and while children don't arrive until after 2:00 p.m. it could have been one of her former students. that's what she feared. >> do you think you knew any of the victims? >> it's possible. >> reporter: police are trying to figure out what sparked the shooting and what prompted one of the gunshot victims to run two blocks. >> he was transported to the prince george's hospital center and that was the first victim

prince george's county police are investigating a triple shooting in kentland. bureau chief, tracee wilkins is live there with the latest. >> reporter: this was a shootout on the playground and two guns involved. so far police say they have recovered neither, but they have three people who have been shot and are recovering from gunshot wounds and they're trying to figure out what happened here. >> it sounded like maybe four or five different shots. i didn't think they were shots at first. >> reporter: this woman who did not want to be identified was standing outside the community center when shots were fired and a group of men took off running. i was outside on the phone, and i saw two guys and i didn't know -- i didn't know what was going on. >> turns out there was an exchange of gun fire on the playground just steps away from this rec center and nothing, you know, happened while they were here. >> maryland park police are trying to figure out what sparked the shooting and what prompted one of the gunshot victims to run two blocks away from the home in the 6700
