strengthen kentucky's long-term capacity. by embracing tough but thoughtful fiscal decisions, you and i brought kentucky through the worst recession of our lifetimes better than most other states, and today our economic momentum is gaining national recognition. we've made a lot of progress. for example, our one-year net job growth recently ranked second in the nation, and our current unemployment rate is the lowest in over four years. that jobless rate has fallen almost 25 percent in two years. in fact, we're now adding jobs at the pre-recession pace. furthermore, we're setting records with our exports, and we're importing jobs and investments from countries like japan, china, korea, india, france and germany. four years ago, the auto industry was in crisis. last year, kentucky auto makers produced more than a million cars and light trucks for the first time since 2007. and the construction of two bridges in jefferson county -- after 40 years of talk -- will create 4,000 construction- related jobs over the next six years. so

kentucky has been solidly red for decades now.ames, giving it eight electoral votes to mitt romney back in november. we saw judd stand up at the democratic convention and nominate president obama, but she appeared in campaign ads, she touted obama care. could a majority of kentuckians really back her political policy substances, or do you think that it's just star power that will get her the most attention? >> well, i think that's what she's trying to weigh. that's what a lot of democrats in kentucky are trying to weigh. you know, at the moment it's really amazing when you think that this ad from american crossroads came out so early. we're talking about a campaign that's a year away at least before he even starts to come up on the radar. it's worth noting that the american crossroads president is a former campaign manager and former chief of staff to mitch mcconnell, so this was obviously a shot across the bow, a preemptive streak, if you will. some democrats think she would be formidable because she has star power and charisma.

the timing was right for kentucky.09, our general assembly unanimously, unanimously passed major education reform. we have to support educators to implement the new system. kentucky was one of the first states to apply for the waiver due to the state legislation, and the waiver enabled kentucky to have a single accountability system rather than separate federal and state systems. kentucky completed a waiver application that built on the key components of no child left behind. we kept a focus on proficiency, achievement, gaps, graduation rates, and annual progress. however, we lived to a more rigorous standard, college and career readiness for all children. our state legislation had recognized the economic imperative of having more students graduate from high school than achieved college and career readiness in addition to basic skills proefficiency. we are seeing early signs of improvement. our graduation rates improved, and the percentage of graduates from kentucky high schools who are meeting the college and career r
