and joining me now dave weigel, among the media strum in kentucky.t's him holding up his tape recorder. dave, it was a really wild scene from, at least from the cameras. what was it like in person? >> it was wild there, frankly. it started at 3:00 p.m., the rally was supposed to start at 3:00 p.m. people were lining up to get into this thing by 8:00 a.m. this town is not really equipped for an event of this size. the line of cars to get in lasted -- by the time it started, lasted more than an hour. i gave up and sat in my car working. and this was a major event that had been executed well and planned well, that was some of related to ted cruz that they'd been on the ground for days trying to make this into a major event. >> talk about that. you could tell this was not haphazard. there was a p.a. system, a stage, there were people on the ground. my understanding is huckabee had staffers who were there sort of coordinating all of this. and ted cruz came in today. who organized this and how? >> well, it was huckabee and a constellation of these groups,

really it still is in kentucky.he supreme court decision imposes same-sex marriage on all the states against their laws. in this case, the governor of kentucky had the opportunity to exempt any clerk who had a exemption exception to participating in a same sex marriage. rather than doing that duty, the governor ran roughshod over them. >> don't the people get to decide this? that's the important part here. and it was kim willing to accept the accommodation or a different job so she didn't have to participate in something -- a new statute that shifted her job description? >> well, kim davis asked the legislature to take action on this issue well before the supreme court's decision in june. she did it within weeks of becoming elected. so this wasn't a spur of the moment decision for her not to issue licenses. the fact is, she was elected to the rowan county clerk office. marriage licenses are less than one tenth of one percent of what she does. like all persons under kentucky law she's entitled to an accommodation. th

they both raced down to kentucky today for this rally in support of this county clerk.ckabee's campaign started promoting this rally over the weekend. but both of the presidential candidates raced down there, presumably for a jailhouse meeting and photo-op with this clerk inside her jail cell. that was apparently the plan, the judge messed that up for both of those presidential candidates by announcing today he was going to release that county clerk from jail. she was a free woman, so then the competition was on, right? you can't have the jailhouse photo. so who's going to look like he's freeing her? who's going to be her savior? champion. which presidential candidate is going to score the most points by looking like he was somehow part of it? in that moment when he was having that weird exchange, turns out, he was being told by a huckabee staffer that the savior that day was not going to be him. according to the times, quote, when senator cruz exited the jail, a throng of journalists beckoned him toward their microphones, but an aide to mr. huckabee blocked the path of
