kentucky is home to a vibrant farming community. i heard family farmers loud and clear. they said, we need tax relief, and that's what congress delivered. thanks to our once in a generation tax reform law, it will be easier for farmers in kentucky and around the country to invest in new capital equipment and recover their costs. according to the farm bureau federation, 93% of u.s. farms filed taxes through the individual code. they will benefit from the major relief we secured for pass-through businesses. and especially important for farmers, this tax bill doubled the exemption from the death tax. it -- on the same dime. now this burden will fall on fewer american farmers and ranchers. thanks to the work of senator robert, senator hatch and many others, we passed a tax bill that the farm bureau federation and the kentucky farm bureau enthusiastically endorse. and now farming families throughout america will reap the benefits. on another matter, later today the senate will vote on the confirmation of william campbell to serve as district judge for tennessee. like the othe

what kind of was kentucky first in line? >> the idea of requiring people on medicaid to work or do some other kind of community engagement has been something that many republicans and other conservatives have been eager to do for years. it started with welfare reform 20 years ago and then moved into food stamps, now called snap. the notion that people who receive certain government benefits should have to do something in exchange for getting that help. but that's never been part of medicaid before, which is, of course, health insurance for low-income people in this country. and a number of states had asked for federal permission to do this during the obama administration and always been rejected, but under the trump administration there's been much more sympathy for this idea. as you said, kentucky just became the first state to get permission on friday. >> sreenivasan: there was medication expansion in several states, so that increased the number of people in states like kentucky that were receiving medicaid. i'm assuming t

that might be true in new york or san francisco, it sure isn't true in kentucky. and i think taking that argument to most kitchen tables would get you laughed out of the room. of course immediate raises, bonuses and worker benefits are far from the whole story. tax reform will also deliver direct relief to middle-class families across america by cutting our tax rates and doubling the standard deduction. typical family of four earning 1 million income will get to keep more than $2000 of their own money if they were at otherwise sent to the irs next year. further, the long repeals obamacare unitive individual mandate tax and soon many americans are likely to see lower utility rates as utility companies pass along their savings to consumers. just yesterday to kentucky to lose as the public service commission for permission to pass $180 million in tax reform savings on to their customers. which should lower their bills this year. that's particularly important to low income families because paying their utility bill isil a big percentage of many of their take-home pay.
