her democratic opponent, former senator bob kerrey. kerrey also got a boost from senator chuck hagel, a republican. meanwhile, republicans who had rejected todd akin in missouri after his comments about legitimate rape are now having second thoughts. national republicans won't say whether they're injected funds into missouri, but suddenly akin received more than $2 million in the final days of the campaign. but the extremism is taking its toll on other high profile races in the house. joe walsh in illinois seems to be toast. polls are tightening for steve king in iowa. things are not looking real good for congressman alan west in florida. his republican opponent in the primary just endorsed the democrat in the race. michele bachmann is locked in a tight race against democratic challenger jim graves. the right wing's war on women came up in the last debate. bachmann was asked about richard mourdock's remarks. bachmann wouldn't tell voters

the first thing i want to point out -- 2004, when john kerrey ran against george w. bush, the proportion of the electorate that was white, according to the exit polls, was 79%. 79 and everyone hundred voters were non-hispanic white. four years later, and in 2008, that number had declined to 74%. this year, that number declined to 72%. in the meantime, the african- american share of the vote over that time increased from 11 to 13. the hispanic share from six to 10. and the asian american share from one to three. we are experiencing serious demographic change. if you look at these different populations, the white population, the non-spec white population in the united states is a seat -- it aging. the median age is 42. that means half the white people in the united states are older than 42. the median age for the black population is 33. the median age for the hispanic population is 25. half the hispanic population in the united states right now is the younger than 25 years old. what does that mean? it would not mean anything if our politics and parties were not largely

fisher was endorsed by sarah palin, and was up begun bob kerrey, a former senator, who has interestingly been endorsed by a couple of republicans, including alan simpson and chuck hegel, a former senator from nebraska. will it make a difference? probably not. i think fisher is likely to win this, especially on the converse of the opposite of massachusetts, this is a very read state, and fisher will be helped by the people that are voting for mitt romney. the polls show that the lead has gone from double digits to about three. fisher is the favorite. >> when it comes to senate races, bob cusack, what are you watching specifically? >> you have to look to see -- there are some republicans and are running very well in the new states, linda mcmahon in connecticut, as well as scott brown who could certainly win his race, and that democrats in the red states like arizona, indiana, and missouri. that will be the difference. can the democrats in red states win, where will it be republicans in blue states? that will be the difference. you will have to have anomalies to win control of the senate. t

. >> that is what i was thinking, that senator kerrey would move over to that. >> i would agree with everything they said, but with an sterisk. i have no doubt the president would like to avoid conflict wherever possible, and in particular in the middle east. but history suggests what he would like to do -- woodrow wilson was reelected on a slogan that he kept us out of work, and several months later he was asked in congress for a declaration of war. >> johnson was elected on a platform of peace. >> the second quick question, fiscal cliff, do they call a deal together before march, the end of the year? it includes a tax deal? >> yes, before march. i am not sure before the end of december. >> i think by march there will certainly have it. >> that is the expiration. >> that is the reasonable response. but i qualify my answer. >> based on years of history, right. the third question is tax reform. do we get a sophisticated, significant tax reform as part of the deal? >> whether it is part of the deal or in the aftermath of the deal, it is very likely because it is in both parties' intere

later you have former senator bob kerrey running against a tea party republican deb fisher there. that's some of the bigger landscape. what's really important to think about is the republicans thought they had a chance to take control of the senate. it's not looking that in part because of this issue we've been talking about with missouri, indiana but then also some of these other interesting races like in massachusetts. >> brown: does that sound right to you? >> i think that's exactly right. think think the republicans looked like they had a chance to win three or four senate seats. the republican would need four to take over the senate. it looks ifier. the retirement of moderate republican olympia snow in maine. scott brown's problems in massachusetts. now republican problems in indiana. they're still going to pick up some seats. nebraska is a good opportunity. north dakota is a good opportunity. montana might be a good opportunity but plus three or four looks difficult. >> brown: the question for control looks difficult. >> exactly. brown: thank you both so much. back to you, j
