endense, senator kerrey.hat do you think about the senate when you read it right now tonight and you like at the weird anger from people like lindsey graham against this nomination and cornyn which is more obviously partisan. what do you make of the 100 senators and how they're going to vote on this nomination? >> you sort of worry that it could become another one of those litmus test votes as opposed to just an honest judgment about whether or not chuck hagel can serve the country, particularly given the transition, the difficult transition, the budget constraints that the department of defense is facing. rather just answer the question, is he going to be able to fight and lead the pentagon and make certain that our troops get the resources they need, the training they need, the support that they need rather than focusing on that, they're off looking at whether or not something he said 15 years ago, some policy question and, unfortunately, it may command an awful lot of attention, but i do think at the end o

joining me by phone is bob kerrey of nebraska, a hagel supporter. sir, it's good to have you here.re a democrat. hagel is a republican. let's remind everybody hagel did endorse you in your election effort last year and that angered a lot of people on the right. is that why you are coming can out to show your support for him, the fact that you can cross party lines as he was able to cross party lines for you? >> no. if chuck endorsed my opponent, i would still be supporting him for secretary of defense. these are not positions where you can make an endorsement based upon these kinds of political considerations. he's imminently qualified, deeply experienced both in national intelligence issues having been on that committee but he's been on the defense policy board as well. he's chaired the atlantic counc council. he has deep experience with war and peace issues having served during the vietnam war. he's imminently qualified to be secretary of defense. and i was very surprised that he's willing to take the job and watching the hearing he probably somewhere in his brain is wondering wh

. >> i interviewed senator kerrey in baghdad during one of the worst times in the war in iraq, and i ask, you know there has been more suicide bombings in the last three years in iraq and the past 20 or 30 years, and he said, i warned them not to go in iraq, and i said, that is not how i remember. this is a bit of my own diatribe, but i think senator clinton by their support and now of the iraq war, it feeds these ideas, and they have that moment when they can stand up to this principle that is where that is coming from. all that being said, i think he will be fine. he is not going to rock the boat. he will fall out. tavis: that is another conversation. i interviewed him over the years, but will he get through and should he get through? >> i think he will get through. i think he should compare to other secretaries. i am sure he is as qualified as panetta or someone like gates. i did it will be interesting to see what happens. the pentagon is non favorable to of theck hehagels world. the trick is how you manage the massive bureaucracy, and that will be the biggest challenge. i think i
