hashem what are we expecting or what are gulf nations expecting to hear from john kerry? >> qatar's prime minister outlined the concerns of the g.c.c. and their demands at the same time. he said that there needs to be a swift solution to the crise in syria, yemen he spoke about the regional security, and also about the need for the united states to provide its allies in the region with an elaborate briefing on exactly what happened during the iran's nuclear deal. here lice the problem. for the americans the deal is quite significant for both iran and for the region and this is the only way to allow for more peace and prosperity. g.c.c. leaders are concerned that iran could use that deal to further expand and play an aggressive role in the region. g.c.c. leaders have told the americans that they are concerned the iranians are using their problems ice in the region like the houthis hezbollah, militias and president bashar al assad. they are concerned these things could undermine interests of the gulf countries. >> that's what g.c.c. ministers are expecting to put forward to

kerry said that the united states will go on alone. that the other partners don't face the opposition. >> what does it mean for the deal if this happens? >> a lot of bad things will happen. iran is enriching uranium, moving along a math way to the possibility -- pathway to the possibility of creating a nuclear weapon. there's a body of centrifuges that are table for them to restart an ambition programme, without the intrusive inspection and verification. the first thing you know that will happen is the united states turned down the deal. we'll pursue the policies we pursued until now. credibility takes a hit. who will want to negotiate anything with the united states, not knowing whether or not a president can speak for the country. we have a system of advice and consent on treaties and so forth. other countries understand there's a give and take. if an agreement that it has gone through, this sustained negotiation and interim accord, the lausanne declaration, a chance for everyone to look at it, is turned down, our diplomatic credibil

secretary state john kerry. let's talk to the political and defense analyst, joins us now via skype from dubai. good to have you with us. looking at what has happened since the iran nuclear deal was signed. is this prompting an arms race in the region? >> well, you know, i think if you look at the types of arms contracts that are penned today, all of them fit in long-term strategic plans. for the most part our defensive nature. so i would be cautious to say that this is actually spurring an arms race. >> the deal between iran and world powers does keep some restrictions. to what extent will iran still be able to purchase arms for its side? >> i think that's something that is to be discussed further on after once negotiations have gone further. there is always the chance that china and russia will be begin to increase sales there. but in terms of the gcc sides, you know, it's interesting to look back sort of considering the impact of the nuclear deal. when we look back about this time two years ago when tensions

i was actually critical of the type of briefing john kerry gave. apart from the merits -- and i do oppose the agreement -- but apart from that, john kerry's attitude was that this is the only agreement that -- without the agreement, there's gonna be a war, so if you vote against the agreement, you're voting for a war and that you don't understand what the agreement is about. and i think he made a mistake in addressing it that way. and most of the opposition that came to him, apart from the maybe expected republican opposition, were some democrats, people like brad sherman of california, for instance. and then since then we've seen eliot engel come out against it. so i think john kerry used the wrong approach in trying to convince people to vote for the agreement. and there's a number of questions i don't think he answered, certainly not to my satisfaction, but again, it's gonna be part of the ongoing debate between now and -- i guess september 17th is the deadline. >> did you tell secretary kerry that you didn't like the way he presented his argume

kerry's meeting with russia and saudi arabia is also connected to the iran deal. the west is hoping da detente will lead to. >> certainly what the u.s. is looking for is a renewed effort to try to find what it says is a political solution, to the leadership of bashar al-assad, the civil war in that country has been underway for more than four years. we've seen more than 200,000 people killed in the conflict, and the u.s. is trying to find a way to actually basically use the iran nuclear deal as a way to try to spur more action on other critical issues and can be argued that perhaps syria is perhaps one of the top two issues that need to be dealt with. whether there's a gardener bargain coming out of -- there's a grand bargain coming out of therthere that is question, but certainly there is renewed concern in the u.s. that the war in syria is just not coming to an end that the u.s. would like to see, one that would promote more stability in the region. so what you see is john kerry basically trying to push the issue and certainly, given had a moscow has influence i
