lu thank you, kerry. let's get over to kristen dahlgren covering the storm for us in mobile, alabama. it's different there in alabama as you know at the moment, kristen, and we're just getting in from abc news a conversation we had with alabama power and that is that they have fewer than 3,000 customers with power outages at the moment in the greater mobile area. and it seems like at least that you have some electricity behind you in the location you're at close to the waterfront. >> reporter: absolutely. in the downtown area we haven't seen any power outages at all. so that's good news for a lot of people who are here. where we are they say we're on the same generator as the hospital. so they, even if they did lose power, they say they have a backup system in place. but a lot of these lights behind would go out if they have lost power to this area. so fingers crossed that that continues. we are expecting of course some of those stronger winds. but definitely not as bad now as what kerry is getting. and t

kerry is in this outer band.is not what i consider partial eye wall, this band in here, this is kind of the warmup and then nate's going to show us whatever it has when kerry in the biloxi area goes through this right here. this is the northern portion, the northeast eye, when the hurricane hunters have been flying through the storm, dropping their drop sounds into this, that's what measures the wind, this is where they have found the 85 mile an hour winds that is a half hour, to 45 minutes from the biloxi area. kerry is going to go into the green area, which is the lighter rain, the winds will be calm, and then he'll be in the main event in about a half hour. after that, it probably won't rain again. that's your timing on that, once you get out of the steady rain, you have about 20 minutes of lighter rain, and then the main event will move in in about 30 to 45 minutes. >> i'm speaking that let's hope that that goes quickly and is over very quickly and then on the back end there is no more rain and that of course

nbc's kerry sanders is in orange beach, alabama. kerry, you've been very, very busy this season. what's the latest on nate now? >> well, nate is moving, and the general direction will be here in the mobile bay, orange beach area. but don't be fooled by that. this storm, while moving quickly at 22 miles an hour, has a breadth of about -- which means while the hurricane force winds will be concentrated around the new orleans area and over maybe here to orange beach, you actually have winds that will be impacting areas as far east as tampa. the storm surge could be in some places as high as nine feet. so that means folks are waking up this morning, and while yesterday they started to recognize there was going to be a threat, it's now very real so here in alabama, there was a voluntary evacuation . in portions of new orleans, there's a mandatory evacuation. in recent rainstorms, they've had flooding. that's all a result of some problems that have been developing with the pumps that are designed to keep that city dry. as you can see, people have been going to the grocery stores, loadi

kerry sanders is joining us. you can tell us what you've seen so far, kerry. how bad was it?r: well, alex, it wasn't that bad but of course you have the drama as well. you can see behind me the sailboat that was caught up in the storm surge. so it broke away from its moorings and has been deposited on the beach laying on its side on the keel. by and large, i think the mississippi emergency management agency head said it best, he said it could have been a whole lot worse. let me take you up in the drone and take a look at ocean springs just east of where i am. as we fly along, you can see the storm surge came in there as well. we're talking about a storm surge somewhere between 5 to 7 feet, which meant that the water rushed in and then has left really some debris on the roads, but not as bad as really could have been. to give you an example of what the storm surge looked like, let's take a look at the video from last night. it really was quite dramatic because a storm surge happens so quickly. so you have in the darkness, the storm surge coming in, driven by the strong winds.
