if you look at what john kerry one, they are all held by democrats -- what john kerry won, they are all held by democrats. >> thank you for a much for that. it segued into the commentary i want to make which is why what could have been a mild wave turn into a historic tsunami. i discussed the intellectual forces at work in a piece i wrote online that appeared a day before the election, so i would encourage you to take a look at that. i want to focus more on the nuts and bolts. there are two types of seats that swann back. -- swung back. there are the seats picked up by democrats. many of them slipped back into the republican pattern this time, but the others are seats dominated by the group i have been talking about, and that is the white working class. i want to focus on that and see what happened. according to the polls, the white working-class voters for republican side -- by 69%. this was much stronger than any other group. republicans carried whites with college degrees by 18 points, but that becomes even more striking when you compare that to the 2008 poll. republicans carried whi

how many republicans won in districts that john kerry won in 2004?this is again just after the 2004 election and how many democrats won in districts that bush had won and the 2004 election? here you see quite common in some ways a very small number, 65 out of the port of 35 credit place but democrats having a much larger fraction of those changes and you see some republican seats in the northeast and a few out in iowa and the west. what you will see him the next is what happens because of the big democratic wave of 2006 and 2000 a. what happened? almost all of those republicans were lost. they were justified including those two new ones that i mentioned before hanging on before this election where john kerry had won the republicans still held the seats. and democrats picked up those numbers. they gained a number of republican leaning seats, 35 or so seats, 35 seats that they had not have before so the map for democrats before the election from a couple of nights ago, democrats were holding some pretty substantial republican territory. let's see what

in this election they are up for grabs. >> sean: you are saying christians voted 2-1 obama over kerryoversy over jeremiah wright? >> president obama had a can't out reach to the next generation to engage them in issues which they care about which are very different than just abortion and gay marriage. they want to be involved. they don't want to be standing up for a couple of key points that the past religious right has been known for. they are more pro-life than their parents. >> those voters who came out and voted for barack obama are disillusioned. they thought they were voting for real hope and change. they are standing back wondering what happened. they are looking for an alternative. someone like sarah palin or somebody who is very articulate and compelling and has a positive optimistic message can reach out, i think effectively to this newly engaged younger voter. >> sean: the city going to come down to, i love there is going to be a great vigorous debate and a lot of good candidates for the republicans. it is going to come down to a classic conservative liberal view of the wor

and john kerry, a war hero, who has exposed himself to enemy fire who's been out there, been injuredr, is talked about as if he was a deserter. there's not a democrat who has ever questioned john mccain's service in terms like that. there's a huge, huge difference between the departure points of those two discussions. >> i think you can find people who cross the line on the fringes on both side. the difference is that on the right, they have taken those people in the fringe and promoted them and put them in charge. you did have the arkansas project. when bill clinton was in the office that he had an airstrip in arkansas and he was a drug dealer and killing people and all this sort of stuff. but it was the fringe. you can find people who say crazy stuff on the fringe. but those people then became the swift boat people that ran the campaign against john kerry who became the citizens united people who then ran the entire, for example, 2010 midterms in terms of what the ads looked like. you get promoted from the fringe on the right. on the left, you stay on the fringe. >> and it gets pro
