i'm john kerry aku and you're watching the whistleblowers burn pitts have become a serious issue in u. s. military policy. the concept of burned pits is relatively simple. the military needs a way to dispose of its waste, but that waste includes every thing, food scraps, plastics, rubber, medical, waste, chemicals, even broken military equipment. the policy for decades was to bulldoze everything into a giant pile, using acres of land hose it all down with jet fuel and then set it on fire. just imagine all of that burning waste. it would have to be one of the most toxic environments on earth. and what happened is that soldiers and proximity to the burn pits began returning to the united states and showing signs of rare cancers, especially glee, oh bless, domus brain cancers claiming the lives of people. busy like bo biden, the son of president joe biden, and claiming the life of my best friend, david mccracken, the connection between the burned pits and these rare cancers was clear, but the pentagon refused to acknowledge it. and for years after the burned pits were wound down and the

welcome back to the whistle blowers i'm john kerry. aku, were speaking with british author, journalist and filmmaker, andy worthington, about the u. s. military prison at guantanamo. andy, welcome back. thanks again for being with us. that's all right. nice to be here. i wanted to talk about the kinds of people who have been held at guantanamo and who have undergone, in some cases unspeakable torture. i've developed a friendship with mohammed, would sly, he known as the more attaining and the subject of the award winning film of the same name mohammed like so many other people. hundreds of them held at guantanamo was never guilty of any crime, but he was held there for well over a decade. he was one of the lucky ones. he was released, he wrote a best selling book. his experience was made into a movie and he was re settled finally in the netherlands. but what about other innocent people? how have their lives been impacted by their kidnappings and incarceration at guantanamo? well i think, you know, it's, it's difficult to know in so many cases because, you know, most of the people at gu

there was a blow, as john kerry asked who says the course decision is based on a nonsensical excuse. i think that the reason why justice hasn't been served in australia is there is the same reason the justice hasn't been served in the united states. there's a tendency by our governments to cover up the crime and to punish the whistleblowers. this case is another one of those crimes in a long line of crimes against civilians carried out in australia where it appears that the perpetrator is going to get away with it. i think that is utter nonsense that was used just as an excuse for the public. if this were in the united states, this soldier would be put in solitary confinement for his own protection. even if the australians don't do that, they can certainly put him in a local jail, out in the middle of nowhere, to keep him safe or in a low or minimum security prison to await trial where everybody is on his best behavior. and he wouldn't be in any danger at all. the military said australian soldiers have been implicated in the alleged killing of $39.00 anom prisoners and civilians, eno
