let's bring in kerry brown from cancer free in the u.k. he is a china analyst and author of the book c.e.o. china the rise of xi jinping kerry brown welcome back to the news hour we saw there in adrian's report people saying they're frightened of what may be heading down the lines at them are they right to be expressing this idea that they're scared. well i think it's pretty clear that beijing has kind of had enough of hong kong of the protests last year. 1000 has toughened its views about the security situation and given it license i think to want to impose the framework for the kind of things that the national people's congress have said that they will try and impose. very very broadly at legislation it's sort of typical of the kind of legislation you get in china itself of course hong kong is meant to be different but i think it's really a sort of symbol of the way in which the one country 2 systems framework is kind of less and less clear by the day to the point now where you west wonder whether that there is such a fright work it's a

kong leader kerry says the government will work with beijing to put the security law into effect as soon as possible she says judicial independence won't be compromised but as adrian brown explains many of the territories residents just don't believe that. well this has been a dark day for people who were already concerned about autonomy here in hong kong now china's leaders say that this new law is needed to come back things like terrorism succession sedition as well as foreign interference now the latter is a reference to the united states which beijing has often accused of being behind and funding some of the protests here in hong kong now on friday this new law was debated by members of china's national people's congress that's the parliament which meets once a year in beijing and it seems this new law could take effect as early as august there were protests in hong kong on friday as well as skirmishes inside the legislative assembly now currently social distancing rules mean that people can't gather in the streets in groups of more than 8 now those rules are due to continue until june the 4th the question i guess is when will those rules be lifted and what happens
