so we want to go to nbc's kerry sanders. kerry is on the ground for us and was asking questions from that press conference. kerry, what more did we learn? >> reporter: we understand that the authorities after they heard word of the gunshot, that there may be somebody in there who may have a gun and they weren't sure what was going on. so rather than doing a dynamic entry and bursting through the front door, they decided they would use caution. they surrounded the home. they emptied the homes on either side of the occupant's. one was an elderly woman they got out, and then this s.w.a.t. team surrounding the area decided they would send in a robot. the robot went through the door, looked around, didn't see anything. they attempted to make contact with somebody inside to see if there was a need for negotiation. again, nobody responded, and eventually they determined here at the end that it was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound that led to the death of the suspect here. now, it's interesting, the georgia bureau of invest

kerry sanders is live in mexico city. kerry, what are investigators saying today? >> well, officially, the authorities say 33 people have died, but they do indeed expect the death toll will rise. the market is one where all of this concentration of fireworks led to the disaster. it was all in one area about the size of four football fields. it was just so much, they estimate maybe 20 tons of fireworks all compact in there. when it went off, there was a chain reaction. to give you an idea of how there have been other sorts of similar disasters in the state, or in mexico, we decided to look back at the statistics and realized that, well, it was only in 1988, where there was a similar explosion, this one here in mexico city. 62 people died in that. then in 1999, 61 people died. in 2002 in varacruz, 28 died, and then in tultepec, which is where this happened, only in 2005, 100-plus injured, and a year later, again, an explosion. i spoke to a woman there who was there and her brother died in that explosion in 2005. and then her mother lost her arms, and yet she says the

nbc's kerry sanders has been following this incredible story for us. kerry, what is the latest?o complete its closing arguments. it's first the prosecution and then the defense, then the prosecution gets a little more time so they get the final word to the jury. there's a slight delay this morning, nothing more than a routine delay, but we expect the prosecution to finish their case shortly and then the jurors will be called what's charged. that means the judge will explain to them the rules of what they need to do and the six jurors will go back into a private room, elect a foreman, and begin deliberating. >> well, the defense. what exactly are they arguing at this point on behalf of dippolito? >> well, they argue that these videos were not proper procedure for the police investigating a crime. that they were really produced in concert with the reality tv show "cops" and that this was all a little fabrication, a little bit of a theater, a little built bit of entrapment, and they believe the jury should focus on that. if they look at that, they will see there's a real problem wi
