nbc's kerry sanders with that report. joining us now, the u.s.rdona. thank you very much, mr. secretary, for joining us this morning. where do we begin? i think it's a teacher shortage that we're look at. what is the administration doing to stem the tide of teachers wanting to leave the profession? >> yeah, you know, this time of year, when we're welcoming back millions of students and educators and parents are excited, you know, this is going to be the year full of promise and possibilities, we are dealing with a shortage issue. as your clip showed, it's really a respect issue, too. we need to make sure were respecting the profession. that means competitive salaries, better working conditions, and teacher voice as we reimagine school. you know, teachers make 20% less than other -- than college graduates in other fields. it is unacceptable. in montana, a starting salary is $32,000. what are you going to do with that? we really need to lift the profession by making sure we're honoring the teacher, paying a competitive salary. teachers have proven

nbc's senior national correspondent kerry sanders joins us from a brewery in fort lauderdale kerry, what'she brewery with all of these tanks and one of the ingredients to make beer, well, it's this right here it's the barley. but there is another key ingredient that makes this, and that's carbon dioxide. and, unfortunately, this morning as brewers like jeff rose here, just sort of checking out the early brewing process here this morning, well, that carbon dioxide is yet another supply chain problem. beer taps running dry. not yet, but -- >> if there is going to be a beer shortage, it will be a problem. >> reporter: the problem is to get the bubbles requires co2 much of the nation's carbon dioxide used in beer is shipped from mississippi where they encountered a recent contamination issue, causing shortages, and then a train line strike in the midwest resulted in co2 delivery problems. >> more breweries are experiencing the same problem and those are just the ones that i know of. it was as if a switch went off overnight. >> reporter: at tarpon river brew in fort lauderdale they make up to 3

national correspondent kerry sanders is in florida. it is really a problem there, kerry. good morning >> reporter: yeah, good morning. i'm in it mrs. baldwin's fifth grade classroom -- miss anderson's classroom at baldwin academy. yeah, she's been a teacher for ten years. but here at this school, they've been able to solve the problem of the shortage by pulling some of the administrators into the classroom that are former teachers but in other parts of florida, they're hiring teachers that do not even have a teaching certificate. as the white board says, help is wanted and the problem is not unique to florida. it is a nationwide problem it's back to school for students, but not for some teaches who are leaving the profession in record numbers >> come on in, boys and girls. >> reporter: schools nationwide are struggling to find qualified teachers, a problem exacerbated by the pandemic. >> you're talking about dealing with more hassle, anxiety, depression, for the same amount of pay >> reporter: estimated 300,000 public school teachers and staff left the field between febru
