we want to go there to kerry sanders in hard-hit punta gorda, florida. kerry, good morning. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: we're here in charlotte county. there is no power here. this is a community that did not get the storm surge. in fact, they got the negative storm surge. the water, because of the counterclockwise rotation and where the eye was, actually sucked all the water out of charlotte harbor, kind of a curious view. but as we're waiting to find out about those who may need to be rescued, there are the stories of the survivors. and one of those survivors is renee smith. she's joining us here now to talk about what her ordeal was like. first of all, i'm glad you're here. >> thank you. >> reporter: where did you ride this storm out? >>> i did under the kitchen table. >> under the table? >> yeah. i made kind of a fort with pillows and blankets and hid under the table. before i hid, i had to protect my husband. >> reporter: your husband, kevin. >> christopher. >> reporter: i'm sorry. he's paralyzed from the chest down. >> yeah. he has metastatic prostate cance

joining us now is senior national correspondent kerry sanders.urs previous to the most intense part, i flash back to 1992. when you were covering hurricane andrew and that category 5 storm that was small and quick. but cause sod much destruction. what are you seeing and what are you living through? >> what we're seeing is tropical force winds. what that means really is that there's some trees swaying and a few branches down, but it also means that the fire and police here in charlotte county are on alpha bravo shifts. they decided for their own safety they are not heading out right now to respond to anyone calling 911. they have not received any 911 calls beyond what they would normally get, but there are no 911 rescues that are going to take place now until the hurricane passes through. so wherever you are, you are riding this out without the aid of the government to come help you. let's talk about where i'm physically standing. i'm just about two blocks from charlotte harbor. if we're talking about a storm surge that was officially 10, then 15,

joining me now from anna maria island on florida's gulf coast is kerry sanders. i'm also joined by democratic pollster and strategist fernand amandi, and general honore. kerry, i want to start with you. talk about how things look where you are and how bad local folks expect the storm to be by tomorrow. >> joy, i'm way down here by water's edge to share a feeling. the water here that i have my feet in, it's warm. in fact, there are parts of the gulf of mexico which are feeding ian that are 89 degrees. so we know that a hurricane gets its strength from the warm water, and at 89 degrees. that's like throwing gasoline on a fire. it is just incredibly warm. at least for in some cases five degrees warmer than we would typically have. so that's why we're going to see perhaps even more of a rapid intensification of the hurricane. where i'm here on anna maria island, pretty much a ghost town. same thing down on sanibel island, captiva island, on some of the smaller islands, that's because they have these mandatory evacuations because they know in addition to the wind that

kerry sanders is live now in fort lauderdale, florida. back with me is legal analyst lisa rubin.this all began. the governor of florida last week got two planes and those planes flew 48 migrants from texas. they landed in florida, refuelled and made their way to martha's vineyard. now a group, a rights group for migrants, has decided that they are going to file this lawsuit in massachusetts federal court, along with what in the profession they call jean and john does, three unnamed members in that group alleging they had been defrauded, they had been lured on to these planes with false promises in part given mcdonald's certificates of $10 for food just to get them to agree to do this. the governor has responded in a statement saying in part, the transportation of the immigrants to martha's vineyard was done on a voluntary basis. the immigrants were homeless, hungry, and abandoned. florida's program gave them a fresh start in a sanctuary state. here we can show you this is what they signed. this is the apparent voluntary agreement to get on to the plane. although, some of the migr
