i'm standing in keswick, a small town that was completely destroyed, virtually every home here burned to the ground overnight. this just one of them. i'm here on market street. this is from what i can tell kind of a main residential street for this tiny town, less than 500 people. here is somebody's rv, may have been somebody's home. if you take a look at this, all that's left is the metal frame, the plastic air-conditioning units are collapsed, virtually nothing left inside, just gives you a small idea of the power, the relentlessness of this fire. yet another northern california community has been devastated by wildfire, and perhaps most frightening the fire season is not even half over. the tiny town of keswick was reduced to rubble overnight, with the population of fewer than 500 people. a place according to a pg&e crew only two homes survived. >> right now is our peak heat. that's a bad time to have this fire with low humidity and really high temps and winds. it's just a recipe for bad fire. >> reporter: just a few miles to the west, closer to redding, lake keswick estates also s

has more now from the destroyed town of keswick the entire community of keswick california has been turned to ash nothing remains it want slightly little town of about seven hundred people now resemble something like a faraway planet from a science fiction movie the fire that roared through here was described as a tornado of flames there was nothing firefighters could do to stop it the way that front fire front was coming through it was going to do what it wanted to do we might be able to say one little spot here but the risk would have been we'll just going to try to even be anywhere near there in what remains are the remnants of people's lives there are small signs of life here like the burnt pages of this children's book it's silent there isn't a sound there's still a mandatory evacuation zone residents aren't being allowed back. only the occasional emergency vehicle passes by ironically the only color remaining in town a red fire hydrant that was no match for the flames it's the middle of the day but the sun can barely be seen because it's so gray and dark here the sun can barely peek

i want to give you an idea of how bad this fire was we're in the community of keswick california this entire town completely destroyed from the fire you can see these homes here everything pretty much gone the force of this fire is so obvious here and it jumped the road as well the other side of the street everything gone as well this is a community of about five hundred people it was a small town really in the mountains outside of redding california a working class town and it's just completely gone look at this these are power lines melted brought to the ground there can see the force of this fire that roared through here and showed absolutely no mercy there are more than three thousand firefighters that continue to work this blaze and you'll see a lot of the smoke in the air still as well step over that power line they're not letting residents back in here and that's the reason why is because there's power lines still down and the area is still too very dangerous for people to come in here it's still in an evacuation zone we're at right now look at this another example of the force

this is keswick estates. you can see that there's just nothing left.oared through this neighborhood and take a look at this vantage point from our satellite truck and just gives you an idea of the magnitude of what we're looking at here. this community of keswick just outside of redding, this is also the area where that grandmother, that great-grandmother and those two kids also went missing. as you said, officially, the death toll is at two, but as the sheriff's office has indicated, there's a chance that they might get more missing person reports and ultimately, unfortunately, maybe more people will be declared dead. this is just a truly devastating episode that's happened here in northern california. it's impacted people in so many ways. i want you to hear what some people are saying, beginning with a local newscaster who had to evacuate the set as the flames got close. take a look. >> right now, we are being evacuated. that's where we are kind of closing out right now. we are going to leave the station because it is now unsafe to be here. >> you ju

. >> joining me right now is cnn's dan simon who is in keswick. dan, kind of describe the scene for us. >> reporter: well, hi, fred. the destruction is just so widespread. we were driving around and went past the police roadblock. we can do that because we are media crew, and we came across this subdivision. this is the keswick estates, and just look around. you can see there's nothing left. take a look at this other vantage point that we've set up for you. you can see that this neighborhood is just gone. this is a community that is just outside of the community of redding. this is also the community where those three people went missing. we're talking about a great-grandmother and two young children. we don't know where they may be. obviously, there is a concern that they may have lost their lives in this fire, and the sheriff's office is investigating. they say that they may get some more missing person reports and there might, in fact, be some unaccounted deaths that at this point they are unaware of. but this fire continues to grow. it doubled

and it has burned homes not only in redding but in the communities of shasta and keswick. kpix 5's wilson walker joining us live from redding with the latest. >>> reporter: all right. for starters, where are we? we're on turquoise court in a community known as lake redding estates. this is on the sort of the west-northwest end of redding. and as you can see, this fire has taken a toll here on the periphery of redding itself. i came into this neighborhood maybe about 3 hours ago. the fight at that point was pretty much gone. we can show you some video of the hold the line operation that was unfolding when we got here pretty much firefighters up and down the street protecting the moments that were not destroyed when this fire came in last night. so you can see sort of that familiar patchwork of damage that we have all gotten familiar with now. some homes lost, homes next door that were gone. now, again, this is sort of the northwest corner of redding-proper. now, we're going to show you some more video which is from just west of redding. if you go out the highway towards whi
