joining us now is former facebook executive kev knight ryan raidier and franklin four, national correspondent for the atlantic i'll pick up with congressman long who ask basically said, this is what congress does, we don't do anything for a very long time and then we overreact. are we in that position right now? that the sense that you are getting in term of the line of the questions from the senate and the house today? >> i think you are seeing a line of members who are proposing to overreact. mark zuckerberg made the good point if we create a new data privacy law in the united states it might be harmful not just to fable and its users but to new companies. the downside is it might end up entrenching facebook rather than improving competition. >> it might be the best thing that happened to facebook in some respects. to that point if there is regulation in place it could make barriers higher a into entry in terms of being a competitor to facebook. >> i think that's exactly right. the harder the government makes it for companies to access share data or data that changes places between differen

as earnings -- that bottom kev is earnings for the next year. look how far above that blue line got, that's the s&p 500 shooting up above the earnings trend. now the s&p 500 has come back as earnings have gone up. so we're saying valuations may be overshot to the upside, shiftily, and now coming back. you can look at stocks versus bonds. this next chart is the advantage that stocks earnings yield has over the inflation adjusted bond yield. as this chart goes down, stocks are less -- earnings divided by price. so this is the smallest advantage stocks have had in this cycle but if you go back to prior cycles, stocks look like a good bet. so a few things happening. there's a late cycle mindset going on we came into the year saying we know it's ban nine-yeaeen a nin expansion. we think we can get better a little while longer. but nobody had confidence it would be a five-year burst of growth people are quick to say maybe that was all we'll have for this cycle. >> what shocks me is the quick about-face, from the morning when we were saying everything
