i will say kevin mccarthy also had a relatively good vibe going into his election.thought he might have trouble on the first vote. we thought maybe he would lose a handful of members, might take multiple ballots. he lost 19 or 20. >> wasn't there personal animas to him, which isn't the case so much with johnson? >> certainly. there was some -- but it was a surprising number at that moment. the wild card i am looking out for, kevin mccarthy lost four or five freshmen members. we have a number of the freedom caucus members we are keeping an eye on. are there freshmen members who want to get attention early on? there is a good chance he won't have the votes on the first ballot. big thing i am looking for, how big is that pool of people he has to work over? how many people does he have to make promises to? four or five? those people are isolated and i think donald trump could lean on them and the rest of the conference could lean on them. what made kevin mccarthy have so much trouble, that was a big number, a lot of strength in numbers. safety in numbers for those peopl

kevin: well, no. my observation is that when people win they are less interested in changing the rules, because they won under the old rules. it is pretty farsighted to say the system did not work for us. we just happened to get through. so i doubt it. i think whatever great arguments there are four, say, expanding the house of representatives, or getting rid of partisan primaries -- i don't think there is any gop appetite collectively for doing the sort of things. and i think the reformist energy as you have referred to it is certainly caught up in the doge. i would have to say that whether or not it is going to be a good expression of those energies is an entirely open question. the doge, even if it became a department, which i doubt it will, does not have any real authority. it cannot just change regulations. it cannot stop money from being spent. it can't do a whole lot of anything, you know? if you are worried about federal spending, for example, you should realize that more than half the budget

i mean, again, like it did with kevin mccarthy's speakership.t could hamper their ability to get anything done, and that is certainly not the way that donald trump would want to start his term after the inauguration. but at the same time, you know, there will be a lot of pressure on speakerjohnson, but also these individual members, people like chip roy, victoria spartz, to fall in line so that they are able to enact some of the policies that the trump administration and the president—elect himself has said that they really want to see pushed through. but, you know, you mentioned the budget fightjust before the holidays, courtney, and i was speaking to a moderate republican congressman just before that all kicked off, and i asked him, "oh, you know, are you confident that the budget bill will get passed?" and he said to me, "well, let's see who tweets next." and lo and behold, just a few hours later, we saw that message from elon musk criticising the deal. and i really wonder what the internal conversations will be like in the gop and the pressu

kevin gordon of charles schwab joins me now. nice to see you. >> what is your read on all of this as you have listened to our conversation? >> i love weprin was just talking about in terms of when you get stretch valuations and you get hot sentiment and then it flips on the switch. it can send a name or an industry or stocks in other directions and that brings me to a theme we have had for a couple of quarters now, especially heading into 2025 where when you look at sentiment environment and 24, a lot of the etrics that we track were stuck in extreme optimism territory for a big chunk of the year. you only had a few eriods where it was early april to late april in the midsummer drawdown where some of that got washed out and then it came back very quickly. the environment and the ground is a little bit shakier heading into this year because you had gone through a really long stretch of it being in extreme optimism territory. it is not a reason in and of itself for stocks to sell up automatically but when you have that shaky found

congress yesterday with the most embarrassing -- it is the same congress that had its house speaker kevin mccarthy ousted after just nine months on the job. why? because he dared to work with democrats to actually legislate. oh, the audacity. in typical republican fashion, they have no backup plan to mccarthy, so it took weeks of chaos to find a fifth contender in mike johnson. this was also the same congress that saw the expulsion of disgraced former congressman angela favorite george santos amid findings of fraud and misuse of campaign funds by the house ethics committee. again, remember that mess? there was james coleman's expedition suggesting infusion inquiries against president joe biden that went nowhere. not to mention the resignation of congressman matt gaetz, and his failed attorney general nominee. he resigned ahead of a house at the coming weeks -- house ethics report. these are allegations that he continues to deny. and the end of this congress showed us just how much of a public -- the public has no problem to shut down the government. all because elon musk threw a tantrum o
