kevin barry is live at the busy intersection. kevin. >> reporter: we were here when they cut the ribbon. behind me really the big part of it is the safety of the people driving through and also pedestrians. the mayor of marion says that these cars have to slow to 15 miles per hour. while they used to be a stoplight here that cars would stop at and it was stop and go and if somebody ran the red light, you would t-boned other cars. here, with everybody going 15 miles per hour and constantly moving, not overly does -- only traffic accidents are not that severe. in uptown marion, where this leads to, it goes to an area that is incredibly narrow with small streets. the idea is to let cars come down this way and get off at that incredibly dizzy part of the city road and go up this way onto sixth street. what that does is it takes them from the main thorough fair and opens up some of that driving. it also puts more people on that road which is a secondary road and generally has not been so busy because everybody there. now more cars are

kevin barry is live there now with a look. kevin.>> reporter: it was not without a process and if you growing pains here in marion county. there has been a lot of traffic up and down the road. now the traffic is moving along much more efficiently and that is the purpose of the roundabout. the roundabouts move traffic about 30% the idea is that a lot of the traffic that comes through this thorough fair and goes to the uptown district where the downtown businesses and marion r, just up that way. the problem is that marion has extremely narrow streets and the buildings are right along the roadway so there is not much room to grow the streets and expand the lanes. that is where this roundabout comes in. the point is to take the traffic that comes in through here and encourage you to go up avenue and to head up that way to uptown marion that way. on the other side of the downtown marion area, there is another route to take you up to dubuque and where the marion police department is. it is all about -- traffic flow. the idea is to he

cbs2 news political reporter kevin barry is at the breaking news desk with one of the most interesting stories to follow this evening. >> regardless of who ends up going into the white house, a big race we will be looking at is the u.s. senate. this is the u.s. these colors correspond to the senate race does not how they will vote for president. so iowa is probably safely read. also looking at places like ohio, florida, illinois -- will be big races we are watching. democrats only trail in the senate by a few votes -- four or five, depending on who you look at. this is the balance of power in the senate now. these gray seats are up for grabs. most of these are safely democratic. if you are safely republican. so the two parties are fighting can have a lot of power in what happens with any bills getting through. a party needs 16 votes to have a stranglehold or super majority in the senate. if any party falls below 60 votes, it will be really hard to get any legislation through regardless of who is in the white house. but some other races we are watching are places like arizona, for the p

kevin barry joins us with the latest.>> reporter: the latest numbers that we have are that free people have died and 14 are injured. right now they are doing a house to house search to find anybody else who may have died or been hurt in this fire. this is video from people who were escaping at late last night as the fire was coming through places like national parks and through normal roadways and rural areas. you can see a wooded area off the fire is a few feet off the roadway endangering the cars and obviously the people inside. the mayor is a condominium manager and he and his wife own and run a set of condominiums and that entire structure was completely and totally burned to the ground. he said that people around town were running for their lives before the evacuation plans were set. right now there is a curfew from 6:00 at nig advisory in the town of gatlinburg. let's look at the video from the daylight kind of -- daylight, kind of the day after. it almost looks like a war zone of where the fire came through. they said one of the things that was so bizarre the day after is that y

reporter kevin barry is in met -- in the middle of the protest which so far seems to be peaceful. kevin.>> reporter: right now we are in iowa city on that pentacrest. let's take a look inside. the students brought everybody here in front of the old capital building to kind of sit here. them. mostly this happened with a few high school kids that were discriminated against after the 2016 election results came in. they say they felt unsafe at school and people called them racial slurs and bad names in that way. their idea today is not to protest donald trump, but to protest the hate to have been feeling, even a place like iowa city. iowa city -- rather johnson county voted for bernie sanders and in the general election they voted for hillary clinton by more than double of votes. even in a very liberal place like iowa city and johnson county, they are still feeling the hate. they have march from the robert e lee community center right here to the pentacrest and they are seeing people coming out of classes at the university of iowa and people in the downtown area coming out and seeing t
