joining me now is kevin cullen. n, thank you for being here tonight. >> hi, al. >> what is your reaction to the video released of the suspects? >> well, al, being the resourceful reporter that i am, if you look over my shoulder there is a bar called the oak room. it's one of the finest rooms in boston. i very seldom drink there because the martinis are 18 bucks. i watched it with ordinary bostonians and i've got to tell you the reaction was incredibly restrained. everybody was staring at it and i was thinking, do i know these dudes? i've never seen them before. >> the reaction in the bar was what? when you say restrained, explain to me -- >> the restrain in the sense that nobody -- there were curses, get these you know whats. people were looking at them. do i know them? an older african-american woman turned to me and said, i wonder what their mothers and their fathers think. >> hmm. >> i was talking to our mutual buddy lawrence o'donnell last night. >> right. >> and we talked about the emphasis on the suspects. ever

joining me now is "boston globe" columnist kevin cullen. kevin penned a very moving piece about yesterday's event. he wrote, quote, in an instant a perfect day had morphed into something vis viscerally evil. we will get through this, but we will never be the same. thank you for your time. such tragedy in your city, kevin. you were walking around today. how is the city responding? >> well, al, i think you just used the right word. it's a resilient city. it's also a tough city. i think you know that. we -- in boston we'll take two punches to land one. and whoever did this to us, they didn't just do it to us. they did it to everybody. but it's going to take a lot more than that. we're not going anywhere. and i will guarantee you, al, next year, the boston marathon will have a record field. people will come from all over the world as they do every year. but more people will come. and we will show the people who did this what they -- what they bit off. because they can't chew it. >> the -- the 8-year-old young man, young boy, who was killed, what

with us from boston, kevin cullen, columnist with "the boston globe." michael, you and i were just talking about, just with the volume of forensic evidence, how are they making decisions about what leads to pursue and sort of what to do with all this evidence? >> yes. there's a huge amount of physical evidence, digital media. that's the videotape and the like. and there's, of course, all the intelligence that we're not hearing about and we shouldn't hear about. the clandestinely collected human intelligence, signals intelligence. phone calls, e ma-mails and the like. what you have is a large joint terrorism task force in boston that is kind of collecting a lot of this. back in washington you have fundamentally every bit of the federal government, department of homeland security, fbi, putting hundreds if not thousands of people on this. prioritizing that is a really key element. at the very beginning, they're going to pursue almost everything that looks relevant. and really only later in the investigation do they start to narrow down what they cast aside

joining me now, "boston globe" columnist, kevin cullen.'ve written about this today, about what this mean for bostonians, for the people of massachusetts to have the marathon hit by terrorists. >> yeah. it was striking because if you saw the, some of the footage my colleague at the globe, still took some remarkable footage of the bombings. when that first bomb went off, you saw the first responders jump over, they pulled the barriers apart. they pulled all those flags down. because i mean, boston is an international city but the most international day in this town is marathon day. people ce they didn't attack boston. they attacked all those countries. they attacked all of us. >> and another thing that you wrote today in your column in the globe, you wrote, it would be wrong and a cliche to say we lost our innocence on monday as a plume of white smoke drifted high above boylston street as blood pooled on the sidewalk from the boston library as several limbs lay areplied the bruise asked the bloodied and the stunned. their ears bleeding. we

boston globe columnist kevin cullen is with me and first responder edzo kelly join me here as well.od to see you. >> gentlemen? >> gentlemen. i feel like we're thick as thieves now, i've seen you so much here. edzo, you're based, a stone's throw -- >> columbus. >> take me back to two mondays ago. >> my wife was running the marathon. and i had my kids at the firehouse. i was working that night. when i was finished working, she was going to take the kids home. my company is ladder 17, sounds like one are coming down the street now. when my wife, she was right here at boylston and berkeley, made it to the firehouse, i grab the my gear, we grabbed our gear, and ran up here. and just in the time it took us -- they did such a good job between the doctors and nurses, firefighters, police officers and emts on scene, and all the great citizens that stepped up that day, that they had all the victims already in the triage tent, being worked on and transported to the hospital. >> you said it was the victims' courage that so many of your colleagues were stunned by. >> i talked to lieutenant joe

kevin cullen joins me live.itey bulger, and your book, and never in a million years did i think we would be having this conversation. i read this column at 2:00 this morning. i can only imagine you penned it pretty late last night. why did you write it? >> yeah. well, i guess i wanted to try to capture what happened yesterday and what it meant to all of us here. but also, this is obviously bigger than a boston -- if you go down to the finish line there every year, all the flags from the different countries, all the runners there are lined on boylston street. boston is an international city anyway, but never more international than on marathon monday, on patriots day. and it was striking to me if you watch the first responders when they jumped out and they ran toward the bomb, and they had to pull the barriers back, they had to throw all those flags on the street on boylston street, and i described it in my column, those flags almost looked like victims. they were displayed on the street. and in some way they wer

the things that's really good about some of the local coverage is some of the older guys like kevin cullen from the boston globe i saw him on i guess c.n.n. had him on m s n b c had him on while they were talking about the. one fund they raised twenty million dollars and here's a guy going around boston. and he knows all the cops he's been down to these watering holes. cops he's been drinking with them easements weapons stories and when he looks for a source he can talk to somebody you can ask somebody and have a real conversation where somebody that just rolls into town. they don't have the same connections with people so that there's a real value in the old style of news reporting where people cover to be don't have connections and have relationships no good guy him as your wife ok i know she had to have her need so it makes a difference the way you can get information and trust things to handle things have changed a lot me back in the seventy's i spent seven years in news in lansing michigan in the largest station in that market there were five of us in the news department every station

the best way to summarize the feeling in boston come from kevin cullen of the "boston globe." he wrote this in an article he called a perfect day turns evil. this is how bad it is. i went out monday night and bumped into some firefighters i know. they said one of the dead was an 8-year-old boy from dorchester who had gone out to hug his dad after he crossed the finish line. the dad walked on. the boy wept back to the sidewalk to join his mom and his little sister and then the bomb went off. the boy was killed. his sister's leg was blown off. his mother was badly injured. that's just one family, one story. that 8-year-old boy from dor chester is martin richard. his family today is asking for prayers and privacy. a vigil will be held for martin and his family tonight. the second person killed has just been identified as 29-year-old krystle campbell of medford, mass. she was reportedly at the finish line as a spectator. we're still waiting on the name of the third victim. and as we wait, there are two main aspects to this story now. what happened and the investigation into what h
