johnson. debra alfarone is off this evening. kevin sutherland was stabbed more than 30 times on a metro train in july. dozens of friends and family gathered on the campus of american university to remember a life taken too soon. our garrett haake was there and joins us now from the campus. garrett? >> reporter: bruce, students unofficially come back tomorrow and the fall semester begins. but tonight there were dozens and dozens of current and former au students here to remember a young man whose effect here was profound even though he was here only a short time. the memorial service for kevin sutherland was closed to cameras tonight, but even after it was over, the emotional gravity of that service was plain to see. sutherland's father traveled from connecticut to eulogize his son crying several times as he tried to get through his brief speech. kevin had been heavily involved in government here, student government. friends and colleagues from the school also spoke about what they hoped would be a legacy of service that he might leave
