we are joined by kevin johnson, president and ceo of starbucks. it is good to have you, mr. hnson. kevin: good morning, david. thank you. david: the earnings came out after the bell yesterday and they were positive across the board. on revenue and earnings per share, same-store shares, and your stock is up again today on the news. what drove it? kevin: we had a fantastic quarter. much of that has been driven by the fact that in the last year we focused on streamlining the company so we could put more focus and discipline in the strategic priorities. this last quarter, our holiday performed very well. you look at the fact we posted a --same-store sales, growth same-store sales comp growth. that's a reflection of the strength of the brand in the execution in the last quarter. david: streamlining basically goes to being more efficient, which every ceo was to accomplish. how did you manage to do that on one hand and also serve your customers and increase sales? that is the tricky part. it is hard to cut costs and increase revenue. kevin: our streamlined activities fell into a dif

johnson. this is the "european close" on bloomberg markets." vonnie: let's get to kevinilli about the partial government shutdown. kevin: we are here with house speaker majority steny hoyer. what are the economic implications of this partial government shutdown, and how will congress address that? rep. hoyer: they are unfortunate and unnecessary. the president's economic advisers a couple of days ago said this would cost of a half a point on the gdp, on the domestic product of the united states of america. that is hundreds of thousands of jobs. shutdown makes no sense from any perspective. it is no sense for the hostages of 800,000 taken and not getting paid, some being forced to work without pay. it doesn't make any sense for the people who meet the government, and makes no sense from our domestic economy, and for the international economy. kevin: we have had shut down before, but what i don't remember and covering them is that there hasn't seen to be any major negotiations going on. why is that? rep. hoyer: the president invited us down to the white house three times.
