kevin kish. kevin, thanks for joining us. thank you. why was this report compiled? >> well, we've got a new law in california that for the past three years has required large employers to report to us at the civil rights department data about their employees. what their race is, what their gender is, and what they get paid. and this is the second year that we've provided statewide aggregate data to about this information in our workforce. >> so what is the big headline, the summary, if you will? the big headline is that while california is ahead of the nation on the gender pay gap, for example, we still have a long way to go. >> we do see women and people of color are concentrated in the lowest paying jobs in our state in a way that is disproportionate to their population. >> all right. let's take a closer look at that. it seems, as you said, there is a clear pay gap by race. let's go ahead and show your findings and if you can explain what we're looking at here. this is actually not by race. this one is male, female, obviously, but talk about it seems like this one is about the different categories of jobs that they are in. the men and women in. >> sure. so there are a couple of issues that this data can shed some light on. and one of them, of course, are pay disparities. so men and women or people of different races working in the same jobs and another type of category of information is what we call occupational segregation. so what you're going to see here are differences in the proportion of men and women in different occupations. and you see women very overrepresented among administrative support workers, for example, men very overrepresented among craft workers and operatives. right >> i see that men for executives or senior level officials at 60% compared to women, 40. that was certainly also explain the pay gap. of course, now let's look at the different racial categories, because it seems like there are certainly salary disparities there. what are we looking at here? what does this show us? >> sure. so when we look at race and this workforce and by the way, we'rere talking about employees of the largest employers in california, employers with 100 or more. so there are millions of californians working in smaller workplaces that we don't see here. but we can see that, for example 38% of the entire recorded workforce is hispanic or latino, but a very small percentage of that, only about 9% of workers being paid. the most. so over $144,000 a year are hispanic or latino, whereas we see that more than 50% of white workers are in that highest paid category. >> all right. i assume some of this correlates with what we saw with men and women in the different job categories that the different racial groups are in right. so can you talk about, you know, how this is happening and how we can begin to change that trend? absolutely >> so we've been talking about pay disparities literally for decades, right? the federal government has collected data on this for about 60 years. we can't fix a problem that we aren't looking at and that we aren't paying attention to. so one of the things that gives me hope is that i actually think we're very united around the idea that we don't want our kids going into workplaces where they're going to be paid differently based on their race or their gender. so having the data and having the obligation to collect it and look at it is a great moment for california employers to say, hey, do we have any disparate issues that we can't explain? let's address them. >> well, can i also ask you then you know, the national trend. i realize this is a california law that mandated these companies report the figures, but is there any way we can see if we're at least doing a little better here ? sure. >> yeah, there is some national data and what we can see on the national level on the gender front is that we are a little bit ahead of the nation as a whole. so california women are earning a little bit more vis a vis men than women across the country as a whole. we don't at this time have race data nationwide. we have that in california because of the particular nature of the law that the california legislature passed. so we're ahead of the curve here, and it does give us an opportunity to make corrections where we see them can i also ask you to zoom in a little bit on the bay area itself. >> where are the biggest pay disparities here? and anything of note here are in this region ? >> sure. some of the data which everybody has access to, you can go on to our website at cal civil-rights dot gov. look at the data yourself. download the spreadsheets, look at the charts we know that there are big disparities in certain industries across the state, so there are big dispatch cities in the finance industry that are gender based. there are big disparities in entertainment industries. other industries have fewer disparity. so y also see industries where there are there is a significant overrepresentation of men or women versus what you might expect from their percentage of the population. and again, this data reflects about half and half, which is what we would assume a little bit more men than women in this data set 52% versus 48. but then you see in particular industries big disparities in who's there and who's getting paid. what interesting. >> and that's despite all the transparency laws that we now have. right. a lot of companies have been kind of self auditing to try to level the playing field, but we still have a lot of work to do. keviniate it. thank you. coming up, putting your driver's license on your phone. a pilot program launching right here in california is making it possible. and we want to know what you think. go to abc7 news.com/vote to tell us is this something you'd use or not? >> well, ai is part of the answer. the problem is ai is so early stage right now, although we're seeing, you know, blue chip brand names almost develop within the industry companies like openai, anthropic scale ai, and they're all happen to be based in san francisco. the problem is with a lot of the tech companies that departed san francisco's downtown and office centers, those took years to develop. and right now we're just seeing ai at the very beginning. so it's just a little bit of a matter of scale at this point. got it. >> but it's got potential. it's going to grow and right now, two of those brand names you talked about in the industry, openai and i think anthropic are getting big leases in the city. talk about that. where are they going to be? >> right. so anthropic, which is bills itself as a kind of a humane ai company. they're taking about a quarter million square feet at the former slack headquarters in soma 500 howard street and open ai is thinking about taking about the same amount of space a little bit more in one of uber's bills things in mission bay. but that sort of represents a bit of the irony here, right? these companies are the ones that are growing, but what the space that they are taking are the ones that were vacated by some of the larger tech companies that that grew during the last boom. >> that is very true. but still, these are not renewals, right? they're better than renewals. right >> right. yeah. these are actually new leases, new activity coming to the market yet. and when i talk to an analyst about this, he said you know, ai is responsible for about 1,000,000ft■!s right now f companies looking for space, but they represent three fourths of the new interest. so a lot of the overwhelm ing number of companies are looking for renewals, looking for downsizing . a lot of the new growth that's in ai. >> okay. by the way, you shared with us an ai generated image of what downtown san francisco could look like under the influence of an ai dominated industry sector, if you will, which is i don't know if it tells us anything, but it's a cool picture. so if we have that, let's go ahead and throw that up. and i'm just going to ask you, once you have like chatgpt, its maker, y know, openai and some of the others here. right. is this going to be sort of le that sand hill road effect for vcs where it's like, , we all want to be there. i'm an ai compan going to re on market street, just like these guys or in the mission bay area, just like these guys. >> that's really the hope from a lot of the real estate folks i spoke to. they spoke about ai not necessarily being the solution, but being a catalyst, something that can sort of spark this next tech boom. you know, one one person i spoke to kind of compared it to the development of the smartphone phone. right. not everyone was working on the iphone, but the iphone, the android phone, the smartphone really developed an entire social media ecosystem, airbnb ecosystem, um, e-commerce ecosystem. so there's a bunch of surrounding services and companies and platforms built upon that core technology. >> hey, i think you mentioned that these companies now eat up 1,000,000 square foot or square feet in the city, but how much was lost? i guess that will give me something to compare it to, right? how scope, how big the scope is like, did we lose 5,000,000ft■!s in terms of tenas who had left or what? >> right. so since 2020, we've actually lost some thing like 16,000,000ft■!s. so to call it a bit of a fraction, i think is fair. but the hope is that if ai continues at its continue at its current rate of growth by 2030, it should have maybe up to 14,000,000ft■!s of demand. and that's only ai. so if you can think about how that sort of translates to the rest of the city in its fiscal health right. there's a good story ahead. okay >> but i wonder if since some of these ai companies may make it so that, for example, a different kind of tech company would need to have as many engineers? could that also lead to job losses and less office space needed right. >> and that's kind of a concern that i might lead to the replacement of some of these industries. you know, i think goldman sachs came out a report that said ai will significantly impact or modify around 300 million jobs around the world. and if you talk to ai optimists about it, they say, well, what about all the new jobs that will be created, things like prompt engineer or even jobs that we haven't even really thought of before that will be using ai as a tool to enable whatever that next big thing is. >> well, i'm no futurist, so i can't imagine it, but i hope they're there and plentiful. well, kevinnt exploring the future of downtown san francisco with some of your colleagues, including your editor in chief from the standard. what did you guys explore? what was the conversation? >> so obviously, downtown san francisco is at the top of mind for a lot of folks. and this was the first in our zoom event series where we're kind of taking people a little bit behind the scenes here at the standard and talking to two folks, answering their questions. we really looked at what the current state of downtown is. we looked at some of the crime and public safety problems that you and i have talked about in the past, kristen, and we talked about what downtown is on the verge of transforming into whether that is a new business center, whether i can solve some of those problems like we've been chatting about and whether there is a future for downtown as an arts and culture destination right. >> and i know there are efforts there, right? there are other ideas like bringing universal city campuses.

>> the problem for the democrats is that trump has proven adept at double speak. if you look at his record, under his administration, he was no friend of labor. he was no rfriend of unions. but yet, he's able to go out there and speak to working class voters in a way that we see resinates. and so that is the challenge that democrats face. they often point to the media and say you're not holding him accountable, but the voters are not holding him accountable. and so he also sees an a opening with the transition to bring vehicles and the division among democrats and the uncertainty for these types of union jobs. it's going to seize on that and speak to workers who have frustrations about that. >> new trump campaign radio ad that speaks to this. >> donald trump calls them great americans and has always had had their backs. from tax cuts to playing hardball with china, biden has turned his back on the auto workers by cutting a deal that uses american tax dollars to help fund china's electric car business. >> at the same time, trump is facing criticism from rivals about his going there and tim scott referred to reagan handled dealing with strikes and threatened to fire people who went on strike. >> he did. i i think the comments there from the president of the uaw really encapsulate the warning sign for donald trump. he has a lot of supporters, but his policies did not necessarily back that up. so the millionaires and billionaires, that's directed at the former president. but it's smart for him politically to go there. who knows what the conditions will be. what if they reach a deal the day before he goes there or something. so his going there is a bit of a thee yatices here, but he's playing the long ball. it's one more example of how he's looking ahead to the general election and thinking about michigan. as some other republicans are thinking michigan could be in police or something, it's a challenge for the biden administration, much more so. this has nothing to do with trump at the moment. >> and trump has tried to deal with his messaging on the general election as he did on abortion. his interview over the weekend tried to strike a conservative tone. but ron desantis was out going after trump on this issue. >> i think all pro lifers should know that he is preparing to sell you out. donald trump may think it's terrible. i think protecting babies with heartbeats is noble and just. i don't know how you can even make the claim that you're somehow pro life if you're criticizing states for enacting pro life protections for babies that have heartbeats. >> trump nominated and got confirmed. >> the three supreme court justices, who voted to overturn roe, have made a very difficult problem for the republican party on this issue of abortion. you just encapsulated it there in what ron desantis is saying and what donald trump is unwilling to say or struggling to say with no clear opinion on abortion. he's all over the place. ron desantis, he's the one who signed in the six-week ban in florida, he's making a play in iowa. this is the most important state for him including evangelical voter who is are disenchanted with donald trump. the republican party is all over the place on this issue and haven't figured out how to address voters. >> good thing we have jeff zeleny here on this panel, who was just in iowa talking to voters. this is what one said to jeff. >> if he really did say that, that's a step away. because i believe that in iowa, we need to have a heartbeat bill too. >> something like that cause you to consider supporting someone else? kevin hasset. kevin, now he claims that americans won't be losing jobs with bidenomics and all they are going to have is hope. okay. what happens the truth there? >> right. well, the truth is, first of all, it's a choice between bidenomics and the truth. okay? but, excuse me, bidenomics is basically right now a light of hand that's similar to the cover-up of hunter biden. you know, we just found out from the census that there is a humanitarian crisis in america that in 202111% of single family moms, families were below the poverty line and we just found out that it's doubled, it's 22% of americans. and so bidenomics is destroying lives all around the country because he has created inflation and real wages are declining. that same census report says if you go back to right before the pandemic that incomes, real incomes for the median family are down $4,000. $4,000 per family. and that's what biden has cost us. he is out there basically spreading lies about the economy, it's really quite stunning. >> the real median wages under trump got up to $78,250. i know that off the top of my head which is staggering because that was up was it about 7,000 all in? in the three years in office. and even compared to 2020 at the height of the pandemic, kevinages then were higher in real median terms than they are now. what? >> real income has dropped almost $2,000 just in 2022. and so biden's inflationary policies, everybody knows that they are harming lives. and the fact is that one of the other things came out today the consumer price index. which both the consumer price index radically accelerated we had a month for producer prices that was about the same as the peek of inflation last year. this idea it is going away because of the inflation reduction act which is another lie. inflation is coming back and lives are going to go down from the terrible numbers we just talked about. >> kevin, biden bragged about manufacturing jobs which made me laugh, watch. >> since i have come to office, all they have really done is attacked me and my economic plan. even though recreated 800,000 manufacturing jobs and a manufacturing boom we haven't seen in decades. >> laura: kevin is, it true there hab a boom in manufacturing? >> no. in fact, manufactur
