according to three people briefed about the conversation days before naming kevin mcaleenan to be acting homeland security. the report says it was not clear what trump manmade by his request or his additional comment to kevin mcaleenan that he would pardon him if he encountered any legal problems as a result of taking the action. one of the people briefed on the conversation said it was possible that president trump had intended the comments as a joke, but people familiar with the remarks told the "times" that it alarmed officials at the department of homeland security who were told of it. and in series of tweets on saturday, president trump denied the story. quote i never offered pardons to homeland security officials, never ordered anyone to close our southern border although i have the absolute right to do so and may if mexico doesn't apprehend the illegals coming to our border. it's all fake and corrupt news. the president went on to complain that the "new york times" story was knowingly wrong on many every fact. they never called to check for truth. their sources often don't exist.

and kevin mcaleenan, well, he's been in charge of some of these policies. he's been in charge of the blockade, which prevents people from asserting their international right to ask for asylum on the border. children have often been absolutely unable to get any form of opportunity to ask for asylum. he's been in charge previously of child separation. he now has this idea, which i would call choose your trauma, because he's saying, well, maybe the families will have to choose. maybe i can make them choose between locked up in internment camps or separated from their children. which trauma do you want to inflict on your child is what he's advocating for. we're going to be in a big battle over this. >> well, you might be in a battle or the president might attempt essentially an end-run around the constitution's advise and consent, in insofar as he's done in a number of places. what do you do if he elevates enacting, which he appears intent on doing and then just never comes to the senate with a nominee? something he's done at the defense department, apparently.

we know also that the incoming national security director kevin mcaleenan also is taking a look at itvery difficult choice this binary choice, if you will. it's a choice for parents to after 20 days of detention either decide with their children whether the family should separate or whether they should stay together. it's important also to say that the immigration process can take years, so that's a choice, if you will. we have that graphic that we can show you. choice number one the whole family remains in detention, choice number two the families agrees to be separated as the parents go through the process together. very controversial idea, of course, especially because the united states there is a rule that says when the government takes control of a child, they have to do so in the best interest of that child. the question would be what happens to the child? >> call it what you like, binary, i mean, straight up do you want to say with your kids or not, imagine answering that question? >> joe johns, thanks very much. let's talk about this with john sandwhich c sandwick. nice to hav
