kevin mccarthy has been by the side of john boehner for a while. john boehner has said things very, very similar to that during his speakership saying we need to be a united party and we should all be this way never getting that consensus. that's been a problem. kevin mccarthy, though, saying he needs to step aside because we couldn't get a majority and people to unite. uniting this caucus was a challenge for john boehner and too big of a challenge for kevin mccarthy. >> what happens next? >> that's the $64,000 question. tre gowdy and paul ryan will be courted again. i think everybody will digest this and see where things settle and come back and try and find a candidate. webster and chaffatz are in it. chaffatz said i was building up support. look at the benghazi part of this. kevin mckartsy may be the first victim of the benghazi hearings. because of his remarks, the republicans did not want to get behind that. they can now distance themselves. he have to examine a few things and will come back next week after the columbus day holiday and look at

kevin mccarthy had a strong majority of votes among the house republican conference. did he have 180 votes or something closer to 210 votes. he did not have 218 votes. the concern was that if kevin were to go on the house floor, present himself as a speaker candidate, that he failed to get 218 points and would obviously be embarrassed and humiliated. i think that's what largely drove this decision today. i didn't speak to him prior, i didn't know he was going to do this. i was just as shocked as anyone. but the challenge for our conference is quite simple. we need to assemble bipartisan coalitions to pass any important legislation around here. we may have to assemble a bipartisan coalition to elect the next speaker of the house of representatives. >> reporter: that would be a wild development. let's talk about that in a second but i want to ask you, have the 35, 40 conservative members, because if mccarthy was over 200, have they hijacked the conference? >> well, i have said that whoever's going to be the next speaker should not appease this group of rejectionists who

kevin mccarthy by all accounts does. we're going to be looking closely at how close he gets to that magic 218 number. jason chaffetz really took a pretty significant blow to his candidacy when the house freedom caucus, that conservative group came out and they supported daniel webster instead of him. he was supposed to be the guy who was aimed to bridge those conservatives with the more establishment type in the party, and i asked him about that. here is what he had to say. >> i'm trying to bridge the gulf and the divide. that's not just going to end today. there are new processes and things that we have to do to get this team even more unified than in the past. >> reporter: chaffetz said he will back the nominee after today's vote. that's a significant move. he plans to end his candidacy. the question is whether some of the other folks who backed daniel webster will turn around and back the nominee. that's a question we'll have to see how it's resolved in the next couple of weeks. ashleigh? >> and it's all up to 125 vot

we do not know why kevin mccarthy has decided to take himself out of the running. on this morning at a meeting about this race that mccarthy went to and the other candidates gave us an indication that he was still in it. his staff today gave us all the indications he was still in it. about a few minutes before this came out, i saw his chief of staff walk in and i said how you feeling. he sort of shrugged. i took that as maybe he was just playing with me as sort of saying we have this in the bag, but this is a wild development that is really i think a shocker. certainly the most shocking thing i have seen here in my six years on capitol hill. as to the cause of this, we don't know. it is so quick and so developing, it remains to be seen. there's a lot of speculation about what could cause it. there was a letter put forward by a member from north carolina named walter jones that said that if any candidate had something in their past that could prove damaging, that it should be known or taken -- or put forward to the public. we don't know if that's the case here by any
