i'll leave it at that. >> all right, house speaker paul ryan and house majority leader kevin mccarthysing many of the interesting and pressing questions of today. paul ryan saying he has been informed of the house oversight investigation into the circumstances surrounding rob porter inside the white house. paul ryan says that absolutely the president should publicly and vocally condemn domestic violence which the president has not done. he said clearly a breakdown happened inside the white house and needs to be addressed and kevin mccarthy, a rumored possible replacement said he has not spoken to the president about a job and said that there is no job opening right now. did not answer the question about whether he would like the job. that's notable. joining us now to discuss this. politics reporter from the guardian, sab rena and political commenter selena zito, i got the official letter just now from the chairman of the house oversight committee trey gowdy to john kelly. i have not had a chance to read the whole thing. but one part of this sticks out. trey gowdy tells john kelly that

interesting point by kevin mccarthy just how far left have democrats gone in california?, it's not just in california. it's across the country. you are seeing lots of congressional candidates who are running for seats now held by republicans that were carried by hillary clinton who are to the far left fringe of the democratic party. let me give you a couple examples. texas congressional district 7 republican john culverson. six democrats are running. one is so far left wing that there was an opposition research package attacking her because she was so out of touch with the democrats and so out of touch with the district that they claim she couldn't get elected. in california an open seat california 30 being retiring congressman ed royce chairman of the house foreign relations committee in orange county. eight democrats are challenging for the two seats. the problem is that if you have that many people running in california, you have the two top vote getters republican or democrat go into the general election. you have the possibility of -- in a district that has a a repub

we heard from kevin mccarthy, do not expect entitlement reform this year, that was a discussion with reporters, not on cameras. as we talk about promises plus with the president on from frashgs nobody has the idea how to pay for infrastructure. the 200 million to seed one trillion to 1.5 trillion over the years in infrastructure spending. value capture financing, the republicans are open, the republicans, representative schuster, the chairman of the transportation infrastructure committee says republicans are open to possibly a new tax on individual property owners, value capture financing. talk about the world being upside down. republicans open to a new tax. liz: boo! that's when you anticipate anybody living or having businesses near new infrastructure will have better property values, and therefore those owners have to pay the government a little bit of a tax? reporter: that's exactly the concept behind value capture financing. in the case of new york city, the subway construction, values fell before the subway opened. will the government reimburse people if values fall? liz: yes

and it makes it very difficult politically internally for the leadership, for paul ryan and kevin mccarthy to move. >> we also haven't seen -- we see these young kids doing, you know, incredible speeches on tv. but we haven't seen that turned into a fear some voting force. >> that's right. >> it's hard to think of an election that was won on a gun control message -- >> in ten days, though -- >> i'm not talking about this weekend. if you look at the last 20 years, election s have been won on a gun rights platform, but not the opposite. >> it hasn't been a single issue. >> what did you take away? one thing i thought was interesting was rick scott coming out. he hasn't announced or said whether he's going to run for senate or not, but it struck me that he was crossing the nra on this question of how old you should be to buy one of these guns. whether that's simply a reflection of the fact that i -- i do not doubt this is going to be a front and center issue in any florida statewide race come the fall. the question for me whether this becomes national. if this is a signal to republicans, hey,

joining me now house majority leader kevin mccarthy, who would know more about what mike emanuel is talking ability. are you close to having some sort of deal for the short term funding? >> we hope to have a deal. but it takes the democrats to agree with it. right now they're not. so in the house, we will move today a funding bill for those six weeks. but we will take the funding for defense, carry that all the way out to the rest of the year, because it challenges the military for everything that they need to happen. they can live under another continuing resolution. we'll send that to the senate. 'cause remember what schumer said during his last schumer shutdown. he said he did not want to hold the military hostage. this gives us the ability to fund the military completely while we figure out the rest of the agreement for everything else. >> dana: so you're gonna try to pass that today. i understand the democrats have their retreat, like you had yours last week in west virginia. do you expect this to all get worked out tonight? >> i sure hope so. the democrats are the ones who picked this

then there's the possibility that the house majority leader kevin mccarthy might be tapped to fill that role. all this happening even while the house says -- sarah huckabee sanders told cnn this morning that the president still has confidence in john kelly. now, the john kelly rumors are not going away, in part because there's an expanding dispute over whether or not the white house told the truth about the timeline here. this all came to a head yesterday when the fbi director christopher wray was on the hill. he testified under oath and said he actually briefed the white house three separate times in 2017 about rob porter's file. we're going to put up a quick timeline here to show you how these accounts differ from the white house. the white house claimed that a lot of this came to a head in the last week, that they heard about it when the daily mail was about to publish the reports. according to christopher wray the fbi submitted a partial report on porter in march of 2017. they finished their investigation, submitted a final report in july of 2017. they were asked for more informatio
