and he did is the same thing with kevin mccarthy's chief counsel. he knew that he was making arguments for which he didn't have a basis, but he continued to do it. he was -- he was desperate in many ways for donald trump's approval, to be sort of in donald trump's inner circle, and i do think putting someone like that in the speaker's chair, as much as it pains me to say, is really -- is really dangerous for the country. >> is he more dangerous than kevin mccarthy? >> he's smarter. >> that's not saying a ton. >> and i think that, look, both of these speakers, i think johnson has clarified the situation, he's made absolutely clear that the republicans in the house cannot be counted on to defend the constitution. now, certainly, as i write in the book, at every moment when kevin mccarthy had the opportunity to make a tough decision, he made the wrong decision, so -- this is not in any way a defense of him. i think both men are symptomatic of what's happened to our party. >> and what has happened? >> the party has become in many ways seized by a cult o

obviously that mechanism used to oust kevin mccarthy. so he is walking a fine line of having to work with democrats when he can and have these compromises, but also be wary of conservatives and that right flank because it just takes one person to trigger that vote of removing him. >> yeah, remarkable his majority could not be slimmer basically. of course immigration is the issue that has animated this kind of group throughout in recent years. can we talk for a second about the impeachment effort around homeland homeland security secretary? republicans are pressing forward with this. it has only happened once in american history that cabinet official has actually been impeached. what do you expect to unfold next on that? >> this is a fascinating split screen. in the senate you have bipartisan senators working with the administration to strike a deal on border security and at the same exact time, house republicans are barreling tow towa towards impeaching my arrest my arrest cuss. tuesday there will be a mockup two articles. first one that

and so up until now, really republicans, including mike johnson and kevin mccarthy have tried to avoid a kick down the road the efforts by some of the far right, include ing marjorie taylor greene, to impeach mayorkas. they didn't feel it had the support of the caucus, but they sent the latest effort by marjorie taylor greene to the homeland security committee and since then, the leader of that committee has released a report where they said they have committed a dereliction of duty, that he's directly responsible for the surge in migrant crossings at the southern border. and he has committed high crimes and misdemeanors and deserves an impeachment proceeding. that's going to begin in urnest this wednesday, but it's really interest ing that this is happening in the state as efforts to move forward with the president's impeachment efforts, it will happen on the same day they are going to hold his son in contempt of congress. >> a full splat to start the year. thank you so much. >> thank you for having me. >>> secretary of state antony blinken arrives in saudi arabia in just a few hours
