kevin mccarthy, it took him about a full week to get the votes that. was after a midterm.e will be, i think real questions whether the house function at all on january 6th as is required to do to certify the election. i would like to tell you, like, here's what you do if that happens, but we never faced it. i think there are some workarounds. the house can, as we saw before, appoint anybody to be speaker for a certain period of time if they choose. so i imagine if they got to this scenario, and if this doesn't serve enough as a backstop for them to pick somebody, i think that's probably what happens, if they haven't picked somebody by january 6th, i would probably advise them to put forward a resolution that says, you know, generic member, you are speaker of the house for the purpose of counting this ballots for this day. doesn't sign them up to be speaker for the entire congress so they can avoid that. here again we have never done this. we are sort of making this up. i think it would create a constitutional question of what would happen at that point. uncharted territory

but what we saw with kevin mccarthy fought for his life with 15 rounds before getting the gavel in 2015ionary spending motion to vacate easier to remove the speaker. i've not heard those specific demands with speaker johnson here -- i think there are legitimate concerns with him particularly the way that he handled the cr, and that being forth coming with his fellow republicans. you know, i had congressman some congressman joked that i didn't know i was getting a raise over -- that's not good you want open communication and transparency but we're about to find out. sara: if you were a betting person what do you think guy? guy: there's no alternative that makes really any sense i think a big difference between that drawn out mess that we saw with kevin mccarthy this time that was during the biden administration right so we have divided government a democratic president this time around the president will be incoming president will be donald trump. and he will not be some shrinking violet on the sidelines he will be a somewhat functional house of representatives at least not only controll

yeah. >> biggest loser remains kevin mccarthy. right? >> right.xactly. >> lambasted not by name on the president elect's truth social account this weekend as seems to be his lot in life from here on out. susan, in just taking a step back and i think this gets to karl's point a little bit, which is if you're the president elect, you want two reconciliation bills. it seems like you want to move extremely fast on your agenda issues right off the bat, and you're trying to figure out how to just handle getting a speaker of the house on some level. what does this portend for the opening months of this second trump administration? >> yeah, i think it's really important because first of all, it reminds us that this is an unbelievably really a historically narrow majority that republicans have in the house of representatives, depending on the vacancies and filling those vacancies created by trump's own cabinet appointments. by the way, you're looking at a speaker of the house having only a 1 or 2 vote margin for a significant period of time. that's essenti

this is a situation we saw play out when former speaker kevin mccarthy was vying for the gavel. a handful of conservative republicans say they wouldn't support him or were uncertain if they could get behind him. that resulted in that 15 rounds of voting. ultimately, mccarthy won the gavel, but he had to give away a lot, and that sort of preceded his eventual demise a few months later from the speakership. so this is going to be an interesting next few weeks for speaker johnson. he has a lot of work to do to shore up support ahead of january 3rd, or else it's going to be another long speakership battle. >> yeah, and if not speaker johnson, then who are there names being floated around? >> i mean, that is the key question here. we'll remember that after kevin mccarthy was ousted, we saw republicans cycle through four different candidates. so the big question in the capitol is, as you just laid out, if not johnson, who i heard from one house republican who told me that some folks think maybe house majority leader tom, house majority whip tom emmer could make a bid for it. maybe hou

griff: speaker johnson did something that doomed kevin mccarthy.d a bill to fund the government that needed a lot of democratic support. in two weeks, when you go to vote on a new speaker is speaker johnson a goner? >> i don't think so. i will be supporting mike johnson. these are the cards that are dealt. if we had sufficient republicans to pass some bills we would need a -- we need democrats. we can't seem to agree with each other, we had 30 republicans that did not vote for this bill, we only have about 2 or 3 seat majority. when that happens, you have to get something done, you've got to look over, we have to pick up some democrat votes. the final bill isn't what we would like because we have to pick up some democrat votes so it works against us. i don't think so. these are the cards that are dealt. what we've learned from ousting kevin mccarthy was he was playing those cards as well as anybody could and speaker johnson is playing those cards as well as anybody could. griff: the debt ceiling wasn't on the bingo card, donald trump at that front
