joining us now is chief kevin murphy of the montgomery, alabama, police department. rphy, thank you for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> how did you reach the decision that you would offer this apology in those terms for your police force in this way? >> it was a very easy decision to make. congressman lewis is one of the most decent, brave men that i think i have ever known. and, you know, he has stood in the face of danger, scorn, and ridicule. he is a nonviolent man, a man of peace, but a man of great conviction. and as i told him, a badge is an officer's symbol of trust. and he said to me he didn't think he was worthy to receive it. and i said he was worthy more than any man i've ever met, that what he stood for and it's changed our city for the better. and i'm most indebted to him. the citizens of montgomery are indebted to him for his acts of bravery and courage. and i wanted him to know that we love him in montgomery. we want him to come back. montgomery is his city. 52 years ago, it wasn't the case. he was a 21-year-old man at the time. he had no ide

. >> yesterday kevin murphy app l apologized of the abuses. and passed his badge to congressman john lewis. what do gestures like this do for wounds of the past? >> you know, interestingly enough at the beginning of this year i called this a year of healing and reconciliation. i am so glad and also commend the police chief in montgomery for extending that apology to john lewis because i think it is healing. i think it appeals to other people who may be out there and have been afraid. hopefully it will bring them forward. it helps to begin to forge a new relationship. they are not people that are as contrite as he was as he extended this apology to john lewis and we must continue to remain vigilant and ensure that we protect people that need to be protective in this society as we continue to move forward towards freedom and participate in government for all people. >> daughter of the reverend martin luther king jr. always good to see and hear from you. >> thank you. >> we are going to continue to keep an eye on the event over the next hour or s

joining me kevin cullen and shelley murphy, they covered whitey bulger for over 25 years and have written a book about him called whitey bulger he are, america's most wanted gangster and the man that brought him to justice, also joining me john miller senior correspondent for cbs news and my colleague on cbs news this morning. welcome. >> thanks, charlie. >> rose: great to have you here. >> this is from the federal judge today. he ruled that gangster james "whitey" bulger cannot present evidence to a jury about his claim that he was given immunity for future crimes including murder. so we'll learn more about him from this conversation. how do you think he is approaching this trial? >> what's his mine set? >> he can't wait for it. shelley and hi access to his letters that he's written, he's quite a jail correspondent. and he is really looking forward to his day in court because he's going to take the stand which is very unusual. somebody charged with murder, you generally don't take the stand. but he can't wait to. as he calls it in the letters, he calls this the big show, the big circus.
