one of the first officers to respond to this accident was officer kevin peck. did that is just so remarkable, he crawled under the bus to take the woman's pulse, her legs were pinned. and as he got under there to take her pulse, he held her hand. we have officer kevin peck via skype "right this minute." >> what was going through your head as you crawled under this bus? >> well my first thoughts were just to try to see exactly what was going on underneath the bus. i couldn't really see from you know, where i was standing. she was just very frightened and very scared and grabbed on to my hands. and i basically wanted her to know that i wasn't going to leave her under there by herself. we spoke a little bit about her family. and really, it was just reassuring her, telling her that we were going to get her out from underneath the bus. >> i imagine as a cop, you probably wanted to just lift that bus and do everything you could to get her out of there. was it tough to know that what you were doing was the right thing for her? >> absolutely. if i would have been able

so officer kevin peck wedged his body between the icy road and the undercarriage of this bus p i meaneck, a man of his word, did he not let this woman's happened go until the fire crews lifted the bus off of her and there they go lifting it, slowly but surely, officer kevin peck joining me by phone from west city -- excuse me, west valley city, utah. and officer, wow is first what i say to you, and secondly, how is the woman doing? have you visited her in the hospital yet? >> i did. luckily, i had the chance to go up and see her at the hospital and actually moved her out of intensive care into a recovery. so, it was -- it was a great experience to go up and see her, be able to talk to her and check on her condition and status and i'm glad i got to meet her family. it was good to see them and they were grateful for just the little bit that i could help out their daughter with. >> the little bit. the little bit, as in placing your body underneath a bus some 25,000 pounds. i mean, when you first got to the scene, could you even see her? >> not -- not initially, i didn't know exactly wher

officer kevin peck from the police department joins us now. us what happened when you arrived on the scene and what you saw first. >> when i arrived, i could see her tennis shoe poking out from underneath the bus. as i continued to get closer to the bus, i could see part of her leg. i could see basically that the flesh had been torn away of where her leg was open. >> alisyn: yeah, it didn't look good what you saw and you didn't even know at that time if she would survive, if she would keep her leg. but you talked to her. you knew she was alive and you somehow made the decision that instead of just talking to her, sitting down next to the bus and talking to her, you were going to crawl under there and hold her hand. how did you make that decision. >> well, i really couldn't get a feel for the situation where i was outside of the bus or even just kneeling down. i wanted to be able to get under there and really assess the situation. see what the extent of her injuries were. and just be face-to-face with her. >> alisyn: see, officer peck, that's a

. >> reporter: west valley utah police officer kevin peck found a terrified woman. 24-year-old aryann smith, bleeding but conscious. >> she wasn't able to move. but thankfully she could still breathe. >> reporter: he did the only thing he could. he held her hand and told her, he wouldn't leave until she did. >> she just squeezed my hand and told me not to let go. and i wasn't going anywhere. >> reporter: her legs were badly hurt. he says she was afraid she would die. so, with half his body under the bus, he held on tight. >> i had to reassure her that we had paramedics and firefighters and other people coming to help. >> reporter: there, in their only little world together, peck says he remembered that the street felt cold. and the wait, while only minutes, seemed like forever. >> i could hear people working and arriving outside. and i, you know, just praying and hoping it would be a matter of moments. >> reporter: this one moment, lying there under the bus, with only a hand to hold and words of encouragement. that, he says, reminded him why he became a cop in the first place. >> you

the crosswalk when that bus made a right hand turn and hit her, pinning her beneath it, officer kevin peck a few minutes later and at first didn't see her under the bus but saw her tennis shoe sticking out from beneath the tire. he looked under the bus and crawled underneither, he got on the ground and he says, and i'm quote, i had to go past her leg and i could see her knee and thigh were completely opened up, just peeled back, i could see right into her leg. he went on to say that she was breathing but not moving. so he held her hand and began talking to her about anything to get her mind off of the accident. he says that she was scared. she asked me not to leave. i told her i would stay and stay he did, for several minutes, until see there, the firefighters were actually able to use whrobgs -- blocks and hydraulic equipment to lift the bus off of her. before she went into surgery, she again asked about officer peck so he went and saw her again. he wouldn't say what they talked about but she had very bad injuries to her leg, though she is expected to walk again, and officer peck left us
