trump from office. whether that was asking him to resign, invoking the 25th amendment, or impeachment. kevin it. with the 25th amendment, he thought it would take too long, and impeachment he thought was too deviivisive for the country. so far he has weathered the storm here, and a big reason for that is because donald trump has remained firmly in his corner. they met just this week and have a good relationship. and another reason is that a lot of republicans privately felt exactly like kevin mccarthy after january 6th. they're not keen to hold this against him. >> we know you will keep us posted. thank you so much, melanie. >>> to another lawmaker on tape that we won't be playing for you. republican congressman madison cawthorn is addressing a video that appears to show him naked in bed with a so-called friend. the video was released by an opposition group as he fights for reelection in north carolina. and it is just the latest in a string of cawthorn controversies. cnn's jessica dean is following for this us. jessica, cawthorn isn't denying it's him in the video. so what is he saying? >> r

one time we saw kevin mccarthy buck trump. trump was basically saying, i guess these guys are more upset about the election results than you. kevin mccarthy said who the bleep do you think you are talking to? that's what kevin mccarthy says donald trump. what information do you think they want to get to these members? >> think about it this way, it is interesting that they subpoenaed these five congressman, and not like marjorie taylor greene, not lauren boebert. they subpoenaed the people who talked to donald trump, and they're less interested in who helped the little people stormed the capitol and more interested in what the president knew, when the president knew, it and what the president did or did not do to stop it. then we subpoena people who we believe their public leaks had actual conversations or meetings with the president either on the day, during the insurrection, or in the planning of the insurrection. that seems like a very specific focus. they did subpoena lindsey graham, and they did subpoena anybody they thin

mccarthy, who hopes to be speaker come november, come next year, in the case of kevin mccarthy he was actually telling donald trump and his white house team that this effort to block the certification was doomed to fail. both kevin mccarthy and jim jordan both spoke to donald trump on january 6th, on that day, and could reveal a lot about what donald trump was thinking, saying and pushing for as rioters stormed the capitol and threatened to kill the vice president. >> carol, i wonder with these subpoenas, can we glean anything about what evidence the committee might have and might be about to roll out during these public hearings? >> i think the -- if past is prologue, katie, we are not going to get cooperation from these five members any time soon. they'll like donald trump drag out legal resistance. but you get a sense that they already know quite a bit about what kevin mccarthy, jim jordan, brooks, biggs and perry were up to in terms of helping donald trump, you know, side track democracy. >> what about scott perry's involvement in trying to install jeffrey clark at d.o.j., carol? >> so, this is a really harrow

and then, you know, he -- i think trump loyalists really didn't think he went far enough and kevin mccarthyrty, you know, privately lamenting from when he doesn't think trump can hear him and then publicly praising trump when he thinks trump is listening. that leaves him trying to please everyone and pleasing no one. so it will be really interesting to see if all of this public hard work pays off for him in the form of speakership in november. >> kirsten powers, these contradictions clearly concern you and i and perhaps others watching here. that said, will it concern gop voters in the fall? are there political consequences for mccarthy and republicans for this essential contradiction here. by the way, mccarthy is not alone in this, there are folks who privately say things about trump and publicly say things that are different. does it matter publicly? >> i don't think that it does. i think that because he's made peace with trump and trump isn't going after him, then i think he's actually probably going to be okay. these are, you know, another set of tapes, we had the other -- previous tape

donald trump, kevin mccarthy, mcconnell, it feels like they wanted to get rid of him. let's just say that. now, donald trump, arguably, has a firmer grip on the party than ever before. what happened? you are muted at a, on me. >> i should know better by, >> i should know better by, now right? >> two things are going on right now. what we see with the tapes, around the january tapes in this election, are cynical politicians who, simply, just one on the power. then there's the other aspect. he's right, there are folks who want to brand themselves as trump pests, but this is a strategy. this has everything to do with, how do we turn out disaffected white voters? how do we turn out, in effect, trump space? how do we increase our numbers? we have to appeal to agrees grievance, resentment, and the shorthand for grievance, right now, is the 2020 election. so, this is a strategy aimed at activating those voters, and to get enthusiasm on their side. so, we have this cocktail, and it is a cynic, accrued politicians, who want to hold on to power. understanding, the way to do so is

it was republicans that taped kevin mccarthy, and have now leaked out that audio. as much as it might infuriate donald trumpto hear kevin mccarthy say these things. anything on those tapes that will impact the committee's investigation? >> the tapes are remarkable. because it's almost like there are two kevin mccarthy's. and on the tapes, we hear the good kevin mccarthy. the elected official who understood what the right thing to do was. but again, we know that in the real world, kevin mccarthy never had the courage to do it. never had the courage to lead his party in a way that could have brought the country back together. and we also hear, even on the tapes, stephanie, just to be frank. someone who is more interested in positioning the party politically, in a way that permits it to forget events that took place two days earlier. this is on the eighth, he's already talking about meeting with biden, trying to move forward. and forget january 6th. but these tapes, to the committee's argument about hearing from mccarthy. it's clear he is privy to conversations that he has relationships with people. that there
